Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Cummins of magilligan.

Hi OwenC

There were two Cummings Families in the Magilligan Area. There were Cummings in Tircrevan  and Cummings in Ballycarton.  My 5X Great Grandfather George Cummings was born in Paisley, Scotland , in 1778 and came to Limavady in early 1800's.  The Tircreven Cummings and Ballycarton Cummings were related.  I dont know if you have this book but there is quite a lot of records of Cummings families who attended Magilligan Presbyterian Church.  Its called The Presbyterians of Magilligan Ancestry Guide 1600-1900 by S.T Mc Cracken.

Hi Geraldine,
Although her name is not on the headstone , Castlebridge parish church may have a record of her burial in their burial register. If not try the local Wexford Undertakers, Kearneys, Mackens, or Paddy Mulligans who would probably have a record of her funeral .

Regards,

Summerhill.

Canada Twig,

That book is now out of print I believe but you should be able to get that book through your local library via an Inter-Library Loan.  It is an excellent book and well worth the read, it gives a lot of information on that Palatine settlement.

Hi Lady K,

The James Mc Laughlin mentioned in the Griffith Valuation by Kingskerswell is most likely my 5X great Grandfather . He is the father of my 4xgreat Grandmother Sarah Jane Mc Laughlin who married James Cummings.

Now I have been trying to find any further information about James and have done DNA testing along with our siblings.  It seems that James Mc Laughlin may have been from the Inishowen Peninsula as one of my brothers got that as part of his ethnicity .  A lot of his matches and my matches lead back to Laughlin/ Mc Laughlins of the Inishowen Peninsular area. These Laughlin/ Mc Laughlin matches are also shared matches with my Cummings Ones.

I look forward to reading your book when it is published.

The Elizabeth Cummings who married Daniel Mc Laughlin is also an ancestor of mine as well.

Donegal / Re: Donegal DNA

Hello Magh Ithia,

I have Donegal Ancestry, My Paternal  Grandmother was from Ballyshannon as were her parents, Great Grandparents, My Paternal Grandfather was from Derry City, but his parents, great grandparents were from Muff & St. Johnston, Co. Donegal.

My siblings and I have done Ancestry DNA and my brothers DNA results on Ancestry link him specifically to the Inishowen Peninsula.  He was the only one of us with that result. We all have the same parents!!

We have uploaded to Family Tree DNA so would we qualify for Inclusion into the Donegal DNA Project?

Wexflyer,
You are right Hess was a Palatine family name along with the surnames Hornick, Jeakyll, Jeakle, Reinhardt, Rynhart, Poole, there was a Palatine Stettlement on( Lord Ram of Gorey) Old Ross Estate.  The Church of Ireland church in Old Ross was their place of worship and the church register is full of Palatine names . A lot of them were massacred in Scullabogue in 1798. As a result many of those who managed to survive emigrated to the USA & Canada.

The book Old Ross The Town that Never Was, by Bernard Browne gives a very thorough account of the Palatines in Old Ross.

Hello Married a Campbell,

I am a great grand daughter of Patrick.  I have photographs of Patrick, his wife Annie, and his family.  I also have information about his time on Londonderry Corporation along with his obituary from the Derry Journal.

I would be delighted to share them with you for your daughters' project. I also have the family tree done out which I am sure would be of great interest to her.

If you post two more replies, I can then message you privately with my email address.

warmest regards,

Summerhill

Hello Wexflyer.
A few years ago there was an excellent website called Hidden Wexford Geneaology by Rachael Darlington who had carried out a lot of research on Wexford Workhouse and also had the Workhouse Baptism Register Online.

She also did another website called Kilmore Geneaology which had links to the one above.

I was looking for it recently and I see it has disappeared which is a pity.

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Cummins - Trying again
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
Im sorry I have no idea about the Cummins's on that 1740 Protestant census.
But although there were several Cummings/ Cummins 's in Magilligan perhaps your branch originated in England?  The London Livery Company were granted large tracts of Land in Londonderry during the plantations.

Its a pity about Gedmatch too.
