The Common Room / Re: William Gough
« on: Sunday 14 February 10 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks everyone.
Yes the Towin information looks likely to have come from the 1861 census then, and thanks for finding them on the 1871 census, I think that it was information that we needed according to my chart of my Grandfathers research.
I shall have a look at the Sarah Gough entry and see if there are any entries for William Gough after 1871(now we seem to have proved that he lived up till then) either in Walsall or Liverpool.

I wonder if someone can help me?

I'm looking for William Gough b approx 1817.  in Wales possibly in a place called Towin, which doesn't seem to exist when I look it up or in Montgomeryshire.

He married Sarah Goodall on the 14th May 1840 at Great Hanwood in Shropshire and Sarah gives her birth place as Shrewsbury, where several of their sevn kids were born.  There is a possiblility that William's father was Edward Gough but I can't prove this.

They appear on the 1841 and 51 censuses.  In 1851, they are in Walsall Stafford, where William gives his occupation as Collar and Harness Maker. Apparently according to my Grandfather, who has researched this, William also owned a pub in Liverpool at some point on one of the censuses.

His daughter, Margaret Pugh Gough married James Mundy in 1873 in Liverpool and this is where the rest of the family also lived.

However, annoyingly, neither my Grandfather, who has been researching the family historry for years, or I can find a death for either William or his Wife. Or indeed the actual birth record for William, to find his fathers name.

If anyone could help us track these down that would be great.
Thanks

Similarly most children were born to parents who belonged to a particular ethnic or religious group.

however religions have changed over time and therefore people will have links to other religious or ethnic communities. Christianity is only a relatively recent concept so back to Roman times you have intermarriage there.

So you end up taking the whole of the human race back into consideration.

The Miss Reads give a good picture of life in a country village and the changes and slightly later there are the James Herriots books about country life around the second world war.

Can anyone help me?

I am trying to find out about social history books from the 60s,70s and 80s to reference in an essay.  Does anyone know of any books published around this time that deal with the working classes especially life in villages?

Thanks in anticipation!!

You may be able to find tobacco companies in bristol through the Directories which often give names and businesses.  THey also often have some adverts in for businesses.
