Can you read the name of the enclosed sailor please.

Photograph found amongst papers here in England.

The suggestion being he may be related through marriage to one of the above families.

Did he survive the War?

Did he marry States-side?

Once I have his name acknowledged I will search UK records.

Many thanks once again

Ray.

Thank you all for nailing my family line into the United States.  There are a couple of families here in England who are elated with all the recorded detail you have so freely given to us., and your time spent in doing so. We love you all and greatly indebted.

Hi
Many thanks for all your help and prompt reply.
Yes this is most definitely the John Barlow and family I was looking for. John's first wife Mary must have died. and he has married again.
The son: James Pollitt Barlow (born in England) who's occupation is shown as a printer. This makes it doubtful that he became a doctor (although not impossible I suppose?).
Thanks to "aghadowey" I have the details a Dr James P Barlow's death (age 86) Sept. 7, 1966 (Boston Obituary Index).
Is there any way of finding out what the P stands for.
Cheers
Ray

Ref: James Pollitt Barlow 1880-1966

I do believe you have found my James P Barlow. Bran 1880 Lancashire, England.  Thank you very much.  It is a step forward I never envisaged making and I owe it all to you.  Could I ask one more favor - to look-up the 1900 Boston census for his father John Barlow Bran 1855 Cheshire, England.  It is very likely you will find his son James aged 20 living with him. I would like to confirm James occupation at that time
We had always understood James followed in his father trade as a Compositor Printer - the jump to Dr. is certainly new information, and the death in 1966 at the age of 86 does fit in well with his birth in 1880.

Thanks for your prompt reply.  Regrettably I do not have a continual run of census's so am unable to trace the time period John's first wife dropped out of the picture.  I do know however that the Barlow family lived and worked in Boston City Southern County MASS including one of their children James Pollitt Barlow brn 1880 Lancs UK. James married a French-Canadian girl called Jessie (Ref: 1930 census).  the point is I have a photo of a US Sailor dated March 21 1943 taken at Newport Rhode Island.  His name is poorly written but begins Richard M. ?  I would like to know more about this you man - can I email you the picture and text.  I am new to Rootschat and cannot seem to get the correct format acceptable to make an attachment.

Thank you.

John Barlow from Haughton Green Lancashire England. Sailed from Liverpool to America c1881.  His wife Mary followed with their two children the following year.

We have them from their arrival in 1881 through to a 1930 census.    John went over first, departing form Liverpool, then Mary and the two kids followed the next year.  Mary died, and John married an American girl and had more children.  He was a printer/compositor in Haughton and carried on the trade in the States.  His son James Pollitt Barlow born 1880 followed in his father's trade.

Can help a little with Mary's background.  Both the death dates of John and is wife Mary would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Meliora,

You have helped me a great deal and set me rethinking the family tree - although the Kings' are only a branch line they have played an important role, as tailors, in outlining the family introduction into the business.  George Joseph King 1834-1888 settled in Runcorn, Cheshire and married Sarah Jackson Ormrod in 1859 at All Saints Parish Church, Runcorn.  This was her second marriage.  George & Sarah are buried in the Runcorn Town Cemetery. They had a Tailors shop in Bridge Street, Runcorn where my Gt Uncle served his apprentership. Ref: 1871 census
Thanks once more for your prompt rely.    Ray.
