Linda, thanks so much for information and photos. It is so interesting to know of others who have the same ancestors as me. We must keep in touch. Again many thanks.

Hi

Thank you so much for your reply. It is most interesting to be in contact with other descendants of Geotge Scott. He was my GGG Grandfather and it was his first son, John, who I believe was born out of wedlock to George and Ann Taylor in 1826 who was my GG Grandfather. I would be most interested to have a photograph of Jane and her husband, and indeed anything else which unites our two families. I visited Hollows where George had his blacksmith forge, but was unable to discover if the forge is still there. I believe I am not allowed to put my email address or postal address on this thread, but if you use ancestry, I could send you a personal message with the information on. I have a great many birth, marriage and death certificates, which I have printed off from Scotlands People. If any of these are of interest to you, I will happily send them.
Thanks again for your reply.
Regards
Gordon

Hi
The memorial stone from Canonbie for which I have the inscription, is for George Scott, who died in 1873. His wife Ann Hogg. His son Robert Scott, his daughter Margaret, who died at Langholm, his daughter Wilhelmina, who died at Carlisle in 1909, and at the top of the inscription, although some is illegible, it says................wife of...............and daughter of the above......Scott who died at Nebraska.
I think this is a different stone from the one you qupted.
Thanks for trying anyway

Hi, thanks for replying. I have looked up this tree in the past, and have found that the owner of the tree has the wrong Mary Scott. The parents of the Mary Scott who married James Anderson were not George Scott and Ann Hogg. I have a parish record which shows Mary Scott giving birth to George Blyth in 1853. She was in service to a family called Blyth in Roberton, near Hawick when she became pregnant to her employers oldest son. She returned to her parents home in Hollows to have the child, who was brought up by his grandparents. Mary continued in service, but to a different family. Scott was a very common name in Canonbie in the 1800's and the Mary who married James Anderson could well have been a niece of George Scott. In any event, thanks for replying

I am trying to discover the married name of a daughter of George Scott and Ann Hogg of Canonbie, Scotland. She was still unmarried and living in Scotland in 1851. I cannot tell when she married, or whether it was before or after she left Scotland for Nebraska. She died in Nebraska, probably in the early to mid 1880's. She was either Mary Scott, Ann Scott or Jane Scott, though believe it would most likely have been Jane. Whilst realising this is a tall order, if anyone can find anything out for me I will be most grateful. Sorry I cannot even say when she left Scotland, but it has to have been after 1851.
Thanks in anticipation.

Dumfriesshire / Scott - Canonbie, marriage and death info.

I am trying to find out marriage and death information for my gt.gt.gt. grandfather's three oldest daughters. He was George Scott (Blacksmith) of Hollows and his wife was Ann Hogg.
I want to find information concerning Mary Scott b.abt 1829, Ann Scott b.1831 and Jane Scott b 1833. Any marriage or death would probably occur after certificates were compulsory. I have traced Mary in 1851 when she was a servant in Roberton, Selkirkshire. She gave birth in 1853 to a son, George Blyth by Walter Blyth, who was a son of the family she was in service to. I believe she was a servant in Langholm in 1861. I believe Ann was in Service in Unthank, in Ewes in 1851 and Jane was staying with her grandmother mary in Canonbie in 1851. The memorial to George Scott and Ann Hogg in Canonbie cemetery is partly illegible, but it does clearly mention a daughter who died in Nebraska. I don't know which of the three this was, but suggest it was probably Jane. Can anyone tell me why I cannot find death dates for any of these three. I have tries Scotlands People and Ancestry but to no avail. If anyone can help I will be most grateful

Dumfriesshire / Hollows, Canonbie - George Scott

Hi
My gt gt gt grandfather George Scott was a blacksmith at Hollows betwen the 1820's and his death in the 1870's. He was succeeded as blacksmith by his son Robert, until his death in 1900. Can anyone say if the Hollows of today has any buildings from the 1800's, in particular, is the blacksmith's forge still there. Among his children, George and his wife, Ann had daughters, Mary, Ann, Jane and Margaret. Mary and Ann had illegitimate children who were brought up by George an Ann. They were all born in the 1830's and apart from Margaret, I have been unable to discover if any of the other three girls were married or when they died. The inscription on the memorial stone in Canonbie Cemetery shows George and his wife, and a daughter (name illegible) who died in Nebraska. I imagine this might have been Jane. Can anyone help me to unravel any of this.

Yes they are. They are in Dumfriesshire, just over the border with England.
