Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry.com dna results
« on: Monday 14 November 16 15:57 GMT (UK)  »
Cuckoo in the nest is one possibility as mentioned. Sadly it happens more than you realise. A study done a few years back reckoned that as many as 1 in 5 families had a cuckoo in the nest without the male partner knowing about it.

Other explanations include the war years..when a lot of men where away fighting the wives sought comfort/financial support/excitement.

Also immigration too various countries in the early years with partners disappearing to seek there fortune.

Factor in the old master and chambermaid scenario, as in the olden days dole did not exist and people had to go into service living away from home treat like a slave.

lots of variables.

The thing to note about the british DNA sample by ancestry is still VERY small compared to USA as more people from this country take it then the results will change including yours

Armed Forces / Harrogate Home guard
« on: Monday 14 November 16 15:43 GMT (UK)  »
looking for a look up, my father always talked about manning anti aircraft guns during the war. I know this was passed onto the home guard at some point.

My dad being 14 when the war broke out was evacuated to haltwhistle, but sometime after reaching an appropriate age ended up in harrogate working in a hotel doing silver service. He later joined the merchant Navy.

So could he have been a member of the home guard around harrogate/knaresborough area.

Name was Stephen Muir Born 1925

Durham / Re: Boldon History - the war years

Hello MaxD

Thanks for taking a look at the site. I did originally have 1939-45 in the title which i took our so it would apply more to all time periods.

In time it could even include the English civil war but information would be harder to come by. I am Concentrating at the moment on WW1 and WW2 as i want the site to have a more personal feel to it.

Rather than just facts, i want little stories about the people involved so they can be remembered properly.

This period is in danger of being lost and the number of people still alive during that period is getting smaller every day and i want to try and record what they did whilst i can both military and civilian.

I welcome your comment and take it on board and if you have a suggestion what the title could be or how i can change the front page to open it up more then i will certainly consider it.

regards :)

Boldon is currently in Tyne & Wear, During the War years it Would have been in the County of Durham.

Nearest town is difficult in that it is Fairly central which is why it was important military wise and was designated a military zone with controlled access.

It sits roughly in the middle between Sunderland, Newcastle, Washington, South Shields with the Tyne just a couple of miles north, the Wear a couple of miles south and the coast a couple of miles East.

Boldon provided a Decoy site for the Tyneside ship yards and was also an AA supply depot for the Sunderland area as well as having RAF Usworth on our door step which in the early years was a fighter base then in the later years a training base.
