hello Sarah,

Tanks for keeping me in mind.  If it helps. John Ravenscroft Billington who rolled over in Sept Qtr 1912 married his wife Ann at St Mary's Gt Budworth.   She died <1895>  Ref: CAT/64/63 Cheshire West approx 17 years before him and there may be a clue there as to burial whereabouts. The couple were from the Monks Coppenhall district. There were five children registered under Crewe.

Good Luck I would be quite happy if you waited for the weather to warm up before venturing out.
Merry Christmas.
Ray.

Lancashire / Crosby & Walker Oldham Street

Hi Folks

Attached is the copy of an advert for Crosby & Walker's "Great Drapery Emporium". This also shows
a photograph of Abel Heywood; and if you can zoom
right in - Marks and Spencer Penny Bizarre.

The red building highlighted on the map
is definitely Crosby and Walker; thank you both for this.
Re.  the Slaters Directory info, we found C & W in 1909 and
also in the 1903 addition: and have ordered the Godfrey map - it's already on it's way!! thanks Barbara.

Best wishes
Ray

Hi Tony,  Thanks for the coloured in map of Crosby & Walker premises on Ancoats Street/Oldham Street.  Do you have a view on the date of this map.   In the 1881 census H Crosby & Frederick Walker were living 107 Gt Ancoats Street along with my Grand father and one servant.  I have thought they were living "over the shop" and gave their business address as Oldham Street as being the more fashionable thing to do at the time. (The business does not appear on any census.) Ancoats Street does not appear on present maps - along with many others taken out no doubt by the blitz
Along with Barbara thanks again for all your input.   Ray.

Does anyone have, or can point me in the direction of any old photographs of this popular Victorian shopping area off Piccadilly.  Of particular interest is the business of Crosby & Walker who traded there into the Edwardian period.

You could try a letter to the Vicarage across the road from All Saints Church, Daresbury, Cheshire.  Ray.
