I finally visited St. Mary's on October 2nd 2019 (the 192nd anniversary of my ancestor, John's, burial).

I believe the headstones were removed in 1925 to create a park and only a few were kept and are leaned up against the outer wall.  The clerk of works recorded the location of the graves with just the names of the occupants and no further details so at least I was able to visit the exact location.

After a good deal of scouring the internet I finally found that 127 IBGH was located at Secunderabad near Hyderabad.

The Common Room / Re: What does 'esquire to the body' mean?

That's interesting to know.  It seems that, according to the Richard III Society, my ancestor Sir Richard Salkeld was an Esquire of the Body to Richard III.  He also fought at Towton with Edward IV's Yorkist Army.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Robert Salkeld - death/burial (circa 1785?)

Please help me demolish this brick wall    :-\ - >:(???:'(:(

I am looking for the death/burial of Robert Salkeld.  He was baptised in Brough-under-Stainmore, Westmorland in 1706.  He served as an Excise Officer and took the  Sacrament in Patrington, ERY in 1730 and served at Hornsea, Cottingham, Gargrave, (WRY) and Hull.  He was living in Hull in 1760, where he was referred to as a Schoolmaster.  In 1782 he was referred to, in a 'Dade' baptism entry at Wentworth, Rotherham, as a 'farmer' (of Excise) of Sunderland.  His wife was called Elizabeth.

Sadly, not my Robert I'm afraid.  He was baptised at Brough-under-Stainmore, Westmorland in 1706.  He married Elizabeth Newmarch at Catwick, East Yorkshire in 1732.  He served as an Excise Officer mainly in East Yorks, including Hull, and was last referred to in 1742 as a 'farmer of Sunderland' - a farmer being a farmer of tax and excise.

Thank you for your reply.

I suppose I'll just have to go and look myself if it's just to get this bee out of my bonnet.   >:(  I've just sent off for, and received, a CD, a copy of Monumental Inscriptions for the church.  Needless to say, there were only a few records on it and nothing of my ancestor.

Cheers.

Thank you for your prompt reply.  As I only live in Sheffield I will pay a visit to the church in the near future.
