Hi Mosher,

I'm wondering if Alexander Roney is my 3rd Great Grandfather.  I have him born around 1811 in Carlisle, Cumberland. A marriage to Mary Hamel in 1828 in Gretna Green, and possibly a second marriage to Jane Hodgson.

I've found it difficult to obtain clear records about his 2nd marriage and birth of his children, as well as his parents or any siblings.

Suzanne

The Alexander that married Hammel is not my Alexander then as his (my Alexander) mother was Catherine. According to the above 1841 census, the one that married Mary, his mother was Ann.

Ok I've just had a look on Ancestry and it seems every tree has his birth year of 1816. I'd recommend you don't trust any trees that don't have sources that are accurate! I took my tree private many years ago as when I started I used to believe other trees and use that info and it was alllll wrong. To stop people copying mine, I made it private. I don't update that tree any more for other reasons.

But unless there is a good reason to think it was the boy from the Andromeda, I'd think it's probably not. If he arrived in 1831, I don't think he'd be in a position to be procreating with a free settler in 1833 (John born July 1834).

Hi all and thanks for resurrecting the thread!  I haven't looked for old James for a while but am wondering what makes you think he is the young fellow from the Andromeda?

There is some info about soldiers' documents at this link. Although the link is about the time regiments were in Canada, I would think the records themselves should cover other countries as well?

I have searched via his name on the National Archives but no positive results.  It seems maybe the years I need aren't digitised?

I see from trees he was discharged out in Australia.

Maybe he falls into this category from the National Archives

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4400712

WO 25/3849

Register of men discharged at their own request by the King's Warrant of 14th November, 1829, (including Regiments of Cavalry and Infantry): Infantry - 30th to 99th Foot. Infantry - Riffle Brigade. Staff Corps. Newfoundland Companies. Staff Serjeants. Military Labourers. Cape Mounted Rifles. 1st and 2nd West Indian Regiments. East Indian Company. African Colonial Corps.

1830-1838

Failing that, there's always the fallback of ploughing through the Muster Rolls but it's sloooooow progress

Thanks Stevie.  Do i have to physically go through the records?  They don't seem to be digitised.

I should add that I have all of his history in Australia, just after his army records or anything that could help with his prior to Australia life!

Armed Forces / 63rd Regiment - around 1820
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am trying to get more information on Edward Hugh Barron, who in 1828 was on the first fleet on ships to arrive in Perth Western Australia, then known as Swan Settlement.
He was listed as a Colour Sergeant of 63rd Regiment and arrived on the ship Sulphur.
He was born in 1796, unsure where but is listed as Ireland in some trees (no source). I suspect he may be English.
I can't seem to find him on web sites for UK army records.  Does anyone have access to anything that might help me?
Many thanks!
Mosher

I wouldn't put too much faith in Ancestry trees.  They are full of errors (even my own - I stopped updating it ages ago as I use a non-online program now but so many people were copying it I made it private).  The problem is that there were so many convicts called James Murphy and there is really no definitive way of knowing which one is the right one.  Unless you have one, I have never found a marriage for him and Catherine which would give more details, nor is there a death record for him.  He is a man of mystery!
By examining other factors such as proximity to each other etc the one of the Lonach seems most likely, but again we will probably never know for sure.
I am happy to email you what I have if you PM me your email address.  To be honest it's been a while since I looked at it all so there may be more available now.

Hi attunga11, do you have any reason why you think that James is "our" James?  Most researchers (including me) have narrowed it down to one of the 2 James Murphys on the Lonach arriving 1825 and getting a TOL in 1830, COF in 1831.
His son John was my GG Grandfather.
Do you have any more on Anastasia?
