Carmarthenshire / Re: Henry Davies/Davis 1841 Census.
« on: Wednesday 17 March 10 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi roycymru,

Thanks for the responses.

My Henry Davis/Davies married a Martha Jones in 1852 in St. Louis, Mo.  Their daughter Margret is my grandmother.  My best guess is that he immigrated in the 1847-48 time frame.

I find several Henry Davis' arriving in NY, NY in that time frame but none have a Missouri or Illinois destination.

He is well documented after 1850.

I will  make a request to the CARMARTHENSHIRE-L board and post there.

Thanks again

« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings from the Mississippi Gulf Coast,

Looking for any information about Henry Davies, LLangan, Derllys, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  This is the best fit I can find for my great-grandfather.

1841 Census has this listing:

1841 Wales Census about Henry Davies
Name: Henry Davies
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1818
Gender: Male
Where born: Carmarthenshire, Wales
 Civil parish: Llangan
Hundred: Derllys
County/Island: Carmarthenshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Narberth
Sub-registration district: Amroth
Household Members: Name Name
Lewis Davies 60
Margaret Davies 60
Anne Davies 26
Henry Davies 23

Both Lewis and Henry Davies were colliers.

Henry immigrated to Illinois, USA before 1850 and married Martha Jones, born in  (?)Swansea , Glamorgan, Wales on 30 Mar 1852 in St Louis, St Louis, Missouri, USA.

There is a passenger List for the Ship: Georgia arriving in New York, MY on 20 May 1848 from Liverpool, England that also seems to fit.

Thanks for looking and any help or additions will be appreciated.

Caernarvonshire / Re: Henry Davis/Davies Bangor Wales?
« on: Monday 01 March 10 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
The information I have is a family tree copiled by others.  It has Henry Davis born 12 Oct 1818 in Bangor, Cardiganshire, Wales.

The Marriage register Has
Name: Mr Henry Davies
Marriage Date: 30 Mar 1852
Marriage County: St Louis
Spouse Name: Miss Martha Jones

His name was probably changed when he went through immigration in the USA.  It was common for the names to change in the processing.

Did he marry in the USA or Wales?
30 Mar 1852 - St Louis, St Louis, Missouri, USA

If in the USA - does his marriage cert show his fathers name?
All I have is a listing of Marriages.  The best I could expect would be to find the "Bond" Agreement.

Quote
what was his wife's name?
Martha Jones born 06 Sep 1824 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.

Family legend is that she and my great-grandfather John Jones were brother and sister but I can't make it work.  He was born in Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales in 1823

Thanks for the response

Caernarvonshire / Henry Davis/Davies Bangor Wales?
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 01:35 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings From South Mississippi,

I am searching for a Henry Davies/Davis and looking for a true source.  Some of our family trees list him as Henry Davis;  Born 12 Oct 1818 in ??? Bangor, Cardiganshire, Wales.  If he was born in Bangor, the county should be Caernavonshire.

Searches of the 1841 census do list a Henry Davis born about 1818 in Bangor, however there is a Henry Davies listed in Llangan parish.  The family includes:

Lewis Davies 60 Collier/Miner
Margaret Davies 60
Anne Davies 26
Henry Davies 23  Collier/Miner

My Henry Davies immigrated to the USA before 1852 and settled in Collinsville, Illinois, USA.

I also found a Henry Davis, age 30 who arrived in New York, NY on 20 May, 1848 on the ship GEORGIA.

Thanks for any ideas or help

Merionethshire Lookup Requests / Re: John W Jones - Catherine Roberts??
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
Not Catherine Roberts but Catharine/Catherine Jones.

Received Evan Jones' birth certificate this week.   His mother is listed as "Catharine" Jones formerly Jones.  On the 1851 Census and all of the U.S. census until 1880 her name is "Catherine"  In 1880 its listed as Katherine.

My search of the 1841 Census for "Catherine" has one listing that matches her birthday and town somewhat similar to the birthplace listed in the 1851 census.

Catherine Jones b. 1828 in Llanenddwyn, Merionethshire, Wales

No listing for Catharine Jones seemed  to be her .

Is there any hope of getting any more information?

Thanks in advance

Hi Gadget,

The  North Wales BMD has only one Evan Jones registered in Holywell in 1850:

Received Evan's birth certificate today and that is my grandfather.  His mother is listed as "Catharine" Jones formerly Jones.  On the 1851 Census and all of the U.S. until 1880 her name is "Catherine"  In 1880 its listed as Katherine.

My search of the 1841 Census for "Catherine" has one listing that matches her birthday and town somewhat similar to the birthplace listed in the 1851 census.

Catherine Jones b. 1828 in Llanenddwyn, Merionethshire, Wales

Is there any hope of going any further?

Thanks

Merionethshire Lookup Requests / John W Jones - Catherine Roberts??
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 01:05 GMT (UK)  »
My GGrandfather, John W Jones, born abt 1823 in Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales per 1851 census.  Catherine (maybe Roberts) was born abt 1828 in Merionethshire, Wales.  The transcriber lists the town as Llanwynno, Merionethshire, Wales.

While waiting for the birth certificate for my Grandfather, I am still looking.  I found a marriage for John Jones and Catherine Roberts whose father was John Roberts.  This marriage was in Liverpool, England.  Most of the marriages listed on that page appear as folks from Wales.

Next I did a search of the Wales 1841 Census for Catherine Roberts with father named John Roberts.  I found then in Llandrillo, Merionethshire, Wales.  While looking at that page I found a John Jones the son of Anne Jones.  He is the right age to be my John Jones.

I know how hard a Jones search is and particularly John Jones.  I am open to any suggestion.

Thanks
