« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Tammy,

Have you had any information regarding your query on the Wright grave at All Saints in Wrington? If you are still waiting for information I can visit the grave, make a note of the inscription and also take a photo for you. I should be able to do this in the next couple of weeks or so.

Best regards,
Louise.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: 1851,61/71 lookup Bath - BOWLER please

Hello Gill,

This one really baffles me as I believe I am correct that a nephew cannot marry his aunt related by blood. On the surface it looks like this is what has happened in this case. Surely there must be a hidden story here?

Certainly Edwin Burdett Bowler did marry Martha Bowler in 1835, there are records on both FreeREG and the IGI to support this. Martha Bowler died in March 1854 and Edwin then married Anne Bowler in November of that year.

Why would a 24 or 25 year old man marry his paternal aunt who would have been at least 45 years old? Why would the family have accepted it, which I can only assume they did especially as he went on to marry his first cousin, the daughter of Martha's brother. I suspect the fact that Martha was born in Dunstable and Edwin in Bath meant that they were able to get away with it as obviously there would have been no record of Martha's parentage in Bath but the whole thing does seem very odd indeed. The family obviously kept quiet.

The more I look at all of this the more strongly convinced that Edwin married his aunt. I wonder if what appears to be case of incest actually hides a complicated story?

Any idea why the family moved to Bath from Dunstable?

The plot certainly thickens!

Hello,

I am also researching this family. Robert Burdett Bowler married Jane Waite, my 5 x great aunt. Jane's sister, Diana Waite, married Henry Sullivan. Diana and Henry are my 4 x great grandparents.

Robert Burdett Bowler and Jane Waite's daughter Anne married Edwin Burdett Bowler in 1854. Edwin Burdett Bowler was a widower, his first wife, Martha  (nee Bowler!) died in early 1854. Martha was some 20 years older than her husband and I believe they married in about 1835.

I am trying to work out how Robert Burdett Bowler relates to Edwin Burdett Bowler (other than father-in-law and son-in-law) and how Edwin's first wife, Martha Bowler also relates to this family.

Edwin Burdett Bowler and his second wife, Anne Bowler, had several children.

Many thanks,
Louise.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage Look Up - Melksham
« on: Sunday 13 February 05 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the marriage between my 3 x great grandparents at Melksham: James Henry BUTTERWORTH (1810-1841) and Ann SIDNELL (1798-1893). (I don't know if Ann had been married before, so she may have a different surname.) The marriage would have been before 1836 (probably between 1826-1836). I suspect the marriage would have been at Melksham.
If anyone has access to the parish records for Melksham I would be grateful for a look up.
Many thanks,
Louise
(The marriage in 1833 at Bradford-on-Avon between James BUTTERWORTH and Ann SPENCER/SPENDER are a different couple.)
