Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851, 1861, 1871 Thomas Robinson

Thanks, Alli, for the info on the Noblet children.

The Noblets' connection to Fenton goes some distance to tie the Mary and Elizabeth Carter living at Fenton in the 1871 census to the Robinson family.

Alli, thanks for your post re 13-year-old Elizabeth Carter living at Barlaston with the Suttons.  This would seem to fit.  If there was some way to tie the Suttons to the Robinsons or Carters, this would help piece the puzzle together.

Graham, the source citation for Mary Robinson living in the Evans household at Birmingham in the 1851 census is "Class:  HO107; Piece:  2055; Folio:  14; Page:  20  SGU roll:  87314."  The source citation for Mary Carter living with her daughter Elizabeth at Fenton in the 1871 census is "Class:  RG10; Piece 2872; Folio:  105; Page:  39;  GSU roll:  836386."

I can say with some certainty that Thomas Robinson's wife Elizabeth (nee Jervis) was my gr gr gr gandmother.  Her son James was my gr gr grandfather.  Thomas would, of course, be my gr gr gr grandfather.  However, there is some question as to whether he was James's natural father.  I say this because information (from a marriage certificate and census info) suggests that James was born around 1820.  But he and his brother Samuel were baptized together in 1824.  If Thomas and Elizabeth were married after 1820, it may be that Elizabeth brought James into the marriage from another relationship??

I have no info on Mary Robinson's marriage to Mr. Carter.  In the 1851 census, Mary is not present in the home of Thomas and Elizabeth Robinson at Tittensor.  It is possible that she is the Mary Robinson shown working as a servant in the Evans household in Birmingham, Warwickshire as that record shows a Mary being born in about 1832 at Tittensor.  In the 1861 census, Mary is clearly back living with her parents Thoma and Elizabeth at Tittensor.  She is there shown as Mary Robinson, unmarried.  As for the 1871 census, the only thing I could find is a Mary Carter listed as living on Adelaide (??) St, Fenton as the head of the household, married, aged 39, no occupation, born Tittensor.  The only other person in the household is a daughter Elizabeth, aged 3, born Fenton.  I am afraid this does not shed much light on a Mr. Carter.

I was looking at the "Wishful Thinking" site's memorial inscriptions for Barlaston.  It has an entry numbered A30 that reads, "MARY CARTER, Of Highfield Cottage, Barlaston, Youngest d/o T & E ROBINSON, Of Titensor, 17 Oct 1832 - 6 March 1875."  It seems fairly clear that this is a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth since the baptism record for Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter Mary gives a baptism date of October 18, 1832.

Thomas and Elizabeth Robinson were my great great great grandparents.  So, if my math is right, that would make me a 4th cousin to Graham Jervis.

I had expected that Thomas's wife Elizabeth was a Jervis by birth (as others already knew) because the 1841 census has an elderly Charlotte Jervis living with Thomas and Elizabeth.  To confirm this, I ordered a birth record for David Robinson, presumably the youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth, who was born February 16, 1838, at Tittensor.  That record confirms that David's mother Elizabeth was formerly a Jervis.

The census record from 1841 and even David Robinson's baptismal record from February 24, 1838, show Thomas as a wheelwright.  However, the government birth record for David lists Thomas's occupation as that of "Inn Keeper."  Perhaps this was a transcription error.  Or perhaps Thomas was both a wheelwright and an innkeeper.

I have yet been unable to find a marriage record for Thomas and Elizabeth.
