Scotland / Albert Miller Glasgow/Dumfries/Durham
« on: Sunday 26 November 23 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I am trying to find more information, particularly death information, for my stepbrothers paternal great grandfather.

Albert Ewan Miller was born in Glasgow 8 Nov 1891 to William Miller and Jane Ewing/Ewan McGillivray. He married Theresa Smith in 1913 in Darlington, County Durham where she was from.  From what I can tell he moved there for work as was in the 1911 census in Durham as a slaters labourer.  They had 4 children (at least) Thomas in 1917, Mary in 1928, John Thomas in 1930 (my stepbrothers grandfather) and George in 1935.  All born in Durham.

What exactly happened in the following period is unknown, somehow the two younger boys ended up in ?foster care in Tiree, Argyll.  Theresa died in Annan, Dumfries in 1950, unclear why she was there but Albert registered the death so presumably they were living there by then?

However, I cannot find any death certificate for Albert in Scotland nor anywhere else and I am a bit stumped where else to look and would like to tie this part up before going on to the other mysteries!

any help much appreciated
thanks, Aileen

Argyllshire / Fostering on Tiree
« on: Sunday 26 November 23 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
hi everyone
I am doing some research on behalf of my step brother who is trying to find out more about his biological grandfathers family.
His grandfather was John Thomas Miller who was born on 16th November 1930 in Middlesborough, England.  His parents were Theresa Smith b1892 in Darlington and Albert Ewan Miller b1891 in Glasgow.
I dont know the ins and outs of what happened but John and his brother George (b1935) somehow ended up on Tiree in the care of a lady called Mrs McDonald, I presume being fostered??  I had some contact with a gentleman who said he went to school with George on Tiree and sent a photo.

Does anyone know any arrangements with sending kids to school on Tiree for fostering?  Or any idea why they would have ended up there?  As far as I can see the parents remained in England so seems a very odd place for the kids to go.

John had a very sad end being found dead after apparently knocking himself out and drowning aged  23 in whitehaven, cumberland 1954, I think he was in the merchant navy.  He had married my stepbrothers gran in 1952 and my stepdad was born 1953. Then his brother George died aged 22 in New Zealand after falling down a ships hold.

So all in all quite a sad life for both of them so quite interested to hear if anyone knows anything more about this arrangement or any photos would be even better.

Many thanks
Aileen

Wow Monica thank you so much, you are very good  :)
That could definitely be her, will need to do some investigations to see if there is any relation to that family that I can find or why she ended up with them although that may be impossible.
Thanks again

Thank you so much for all of that!
Yes Mary Reilly was married before she married Patrick Clarke so those children are from that marriage.
Thank you for spotting Elizabeth Clarke I had missed her so thats another child although like you I can't find her in the 1901 census and I cant find her death certificate either.
Its so frustrating not knowing what happened to Jane and now Elizabeth.  Perhaps another family member took Elizabeth in if jane died soon after she was born?  I dont know why I am so invested in poor Jane but her story just upsets me.

I will keep hunting!!
Thanks again
Aileen

Lanarkshire / Missing death certificate Jane Clarke nee Maguire
« on: Sunday 11 December 22 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon everyone, I am back on my family tree after a very long break away and have found myself drawn back to the tragedy that struck this family.
Jane Clarke nee Maguire born c1870 who is not actually my relation but was the first wife of my 2nd great grandfather. They married in Anderston, Glasgow on 24 Jan 1889.  Her parents were John Maguire and Mary Lyons (I dont have any more information on them yet).
Jane and Patrick had 4 children who all died in infancy: Mary 1889-1891, Patrick 1891-1891, Sarah Ann 1892-1893 and Jane 1894-1894.
Patrick married my 2nd great grandmother Mary Reilly in 1898 so I know sometime between 1894 and 1898 Jane has either died or they have divorced.  I was wondering perhaps due to the deaths of her children was she so depressed she ended up in some sort of institution, I can't even imagine the pain she must have been going through.  If that happened would Patrick have been allowed to remarry?
Regardless of that I cannot find her death certificate anywhere on Scotlands People and I presume even if she died in an institution it would still be available?
So perhaps she didnt die in Scotland. I dont have my ancestry membership at the moment (hoping for it as a xmas present!) so can't check the English records easily.

any other ideas from anyone?
Thank you so much
Aileen

Argyllshire / Hugh McPherson and Catherine McGhee
« on: Saturday 01 February 20 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am a bit stuck with my 4th gg Hugh McPherson and his wife Catherine McGhee.
Their daughter Christina (my 3rd gg) was born around 1822 in Ardnamurchan.
She was married in 1842 to Donald McIntyre but as it was only banns no further info.
The only reason I know her parents names is from her death certificate from 1891 where they are both listed.
I have estimated their births around 1790/1800 based on Christinas birth but cannot find any record of either of them in births baptisms banns or death notices.
I cant find Catherine in any census.
I have found A Hugh McPherson in the 1841 and 1851 census living in Kilbrandon but I am not convinced it is the same guy as he is listed in both as unmarried and living with his sister.
I am a bit stuck as to where to go next and I would like to at least find out when they died and if there were any siblings for Christina.
Thank you
Aileen
