Thanks Gadget and Carole for hunting around and posting your results.
I can follow my Mr Jardine-Ferguson from 1881 to1925 using the census, his death cert and burial record.
Regarding my doubts about his name. Am I correct in thinking it was common for Scots boys to be named including their mother's maiden names as middle names? Is the any other custom that would include any other forebears surnames?

I'm afraid I know next to nothing about John Jardine Ferguson.
He turns up in Carlisle in the 1881 census, aged 31, calling himself John B J Ferguson.
According to the 1911 census, John Jardine Ferguson was born in Eaglesfield, Scotland and was married in 1890 to a Frances Smith - although I can find no evidence of this marriage taking place and his children were officially registered as Ferguson-Smith.
The absence of proof a marriage leave me wondering was there a 1st Mrs Ferguson somewhere in Dumfriesshire? He died in Carlisle aged 75 in 1925. His possible birthday was 6th May 1849, but again I've no proof.

Thank you Kerry and Carole for your help.
Kerry, can you tell me where you found the Obertellis going to New York?
Thanks again,
Mark

I'm trying to find the family of a John B Jardine-Ferguson, born 1849/50 in the Middlebie/Eaglesfield area. The 'B' in his name may be Black but I've no proof of this. I've tried Scotlands People for evidence of a birth, but with no luck. I've also tried to find marriages between Blacks, Jardines and Fergusons but not found any that fit the bill. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to trace the origins of the Obertelli family.
My branch of the family moved to Carlisle about 1880, having first lived in Barrow after arrving from Italy. I know there are still some Obertellis living in the Morecambe and Bolton areas and wondered if they have any information on their Cumbrian cousins?
The head of the Carlisle Obertellis, Antonio disappeared between 1904-1911, probably returning to Italy. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look for any immigration records around 1880 and emigration/passenger list records for both periods?
