Northumberland / Bamburgh scandal 1790 HALL+BROWN=Matilda BROWN m DOUGLAS
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
cAn you help please? - Briefly my ancestors came from Northumberland to South Australia.  Unlike other colonies South Australia was actually a company - enough of the history side of things.  In the custody of a family ancestor was an oil painting of George HALL said to be the Constable of the (Bamburgh) Castle. I emailed the Castle almost about 15 years ago - no such records of anyone called George HALL as the Constable. Email referred off to a research who was about the do the same response . .  two days later turned over some papers and there was George the Constable ! ! ! C 1790. The outcome was a book       Bamburgh "Ghosts' - voices from the 18th Century            mostly about how George 'managed' the castle as our modern interpretation of a Constable greatly differs from then as more of a Chief Executive Office or the like.  Things went nice till about 1790 when Eleanor BROWN turned up on the steps of the Castle and very heavily pregnant. The father turned out to be Jonathan HALL the Constable's son - they had to atone for their sins in the local St Aiden Church.  Matilda BROWN was born and that now creates an extremely complex genea family tree project because Matilda marries DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS - as ALL of her three children all name children as either Matilda Hall DOUGLAS(S) or Jonathan Hall DOUGLAS(S).  This appears to have continued in several generations up to the late 1900's. Would be happy to share further details.  Standard offer I have if there anything down under please ask - Alan VK3HV

Found the source
Do a google search....make sure you select books from the top in place of a general search
I entered the words   "mad Jack"  make sure you use quote marks as this keeps it as a quote and not two seperate words
I also entered hall also as an extra word and these yield over 700 hits
tip    quote marks makes the term a quotation for searching
a + sign makes it an essential word or phrase to search for
a - sign makes the word to be excluded
so you could enter it like this                       +"mad jack"    +hall       +Otterburn
That yield 33 hits

Peter...re the census....shaken, tossed, turned, flipped and everything in between.  I have a list running for the HALL's of Durham and NBL since 1999.  It targets the North east of England for the various reasons that HALL's are so common in number that overseas lists for HALL's tend to get swamped especially with the USA - see  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hall_nhbl
The DNA search so far has placed my HALL's in Newcastle, Belford and possibly Alnwick - a new list so is just starting our...has an excellent gedcomviewer program with great options including search engines linked to various other places such as LDS. The google search link structures the quieres in many different ways to gain the best results possible see www.hall-dna.info   Bear with me as this is a new site and a LOT of work still needs to be done

As for the magistrate HALL I have come across material about that person - I have checked the London Times and 18thy century English newspapers without luck so far.  I have a thought I know where the material is and will check within the next day or so

No direct help but the Australian National Library has digitised a lot of old newspapers
eccellent research facility
suggest you register if you use as there is the facility to put your details against any corrections
There are sometimes the need to edit as it is optical character recognition and it may get it partially wrong
Thus if anyone sees your related correction then it may give them a link to you
try  www.nla.gov.au
