Thanks for those replies. I had some of the data, but was puzzled by the two James Messengers in the 1841 census, both at Winchester - I wondered if it was the same man, listed at home and in the [Yeomanry] barracks. I was making the assumption  that Emma's husband was also the son of Jeremiah.
Very grateful for Jeremiah and Mary marriage.

Hi Pauline,
Thanks for replying so quickly.
I would be delighted to here what Vanessa knows.
I'll have to think of a few things to write to get enough posts.
My mother is Katy's daughter, Ann. She told me recently that Katy broke contact with one of her sisters because the sister married the postman - that was probably just after WW2.

I am searching for my Messenger ancestors from Ovington and Avington in Hampshire, England. Specifically, James Messenger c. 1820 who married Emma Foyle c.1832 at Ovington c.1853.
Any information on either family would be great.
Thanks
Graham

Hi Pauline,
I am Helen, a first cousin of Jenny (I am using my husband's login).
I have been trying to phone her re. this thread, but then thought I would join in.
We have all been wanting to uncover the mysteries of Kay/Katy's early years - as jenny wrote, there were all sorts of vague stories - and your friend may have the keys.
This baptism in the Dublin records may have some relevance to the family history:
JOANNES FRANCISCUS HOLEN
31 August 1879
address: 17 WELLINGTON QUAY
parents: JOANNES JOSEPHI HOLEN  and MARIA HYHEN
regards
Helen
