Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Re: Arms in Ballygally Castle
« on: Monday 25 March 19 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Skoosh,

Yep, seen the letters of Denization. James and John Shaw of Ballygally described as farmers (presumably sons of John Shaw and Elizabeth Brisbane), received denization on same date as well as several others living in that part of Antrim - see Patrick Tullus below.

The Shaws and Brisbanes must have been quite inbred as James Shaw married Isabella Brisbane, and their eldest son James married Elizabeth Brisbane his cousin (contract of marriage 1657 with the proviso he took the name and arms of Brisbane along with £20,000 scots money as dowry).

There is the possibility that the farmers James & John Shaw were not the sons of John & Elizabeth Brisbane, but related to those of Lethangie in Kinross and therefore cousins. There are records of Jean Shaw, daughter & heir of John Shaw of Lathangie married to Patrick Tullus of Corkermaine.
Patrick Tullus(clerk of Ramoan) received denization on the same date as the Ballygally Shaws, Corkermaine townland is contiguous to Ballygally.

Sorry, going slightly off topic.

Thanks Hallmark,
I suppose the billets could be vertical cushions, your link shows them horizontal (perhaps they didn't bother about positioning cushions in those early days!), and that your link shows the Brisbane arms from a later date with the chequy chevron referring to the Sempil family (Isabella's grandmother's family).
The hunting horn might also refer to the sempils who have 3 bugles as well as the chequy chevron.

Still not sure.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Arms in Ballygally Castle
« on: Saturday 23 March 19 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Above an old doorway in Ballygally Castle hotel in Co. Antrim are the below crests with the initials IS & IB and an inscription "Godis Providens is Myn Inheritans" dated 1625.
The castle was built by descendants of the Shaws of Greenock/Sauchie as the arms on the left would indicate (John or James Shaw). The arms on the right are supposed to be those of Isabella Brisbane, daughter of John Brisbane of Bishopton who married James Shaw. However the arms on the right do not seem to belong to the Brisbane family.
From what I can see, there appear to be 2 billets over a hunting horn with 1 billet in base. I have searched high and low for anything resembling these arms.

Any thoughts anyone?

Carlow / Re: Pasley family in Ireland
« on: Friday 21 December 12 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Interested to read Kingjohn's post about Robert Pasley of 6 Henry St. Dublin who went into partnership with William Scott.

I have in my family notes Robert Pasley of Henry St. who married Maria Carnes of Usher's Island (Dublin) on 7th Feb. 1809. Her sister Jane married William Park(e)s in 1801,Dublin. Jane and William had 4 children, Maria, Amelia and William all born Dublin. In abt. 1810 the whole family went to Brussels, Belgium, when in 1819 my 3xGt grandmother Mathilde Park(e)s was born.

Maria Park(e)s married George Scott 1st Nov 1827 in Dublin. The witnesses were Robert Pasley and William Scott. - must be the same ones.

Does anyone know of the Carnes or the Park(e)s?

Amelia and Mathilde married the brothers Constant and Victor van Goethem respectively. Victor had a sugar refinery in Lembecq Belgium, one of his sons Edouard was a reknowned edwardian artist who married into the Lafone family.

Have also found a Stephen Carnes of Usher's Island (brother of Jane & Maria?) who married Maria Wisdom of Co. Wicklow in 1810.

Any help on Carnes or Park(e)s appreciated.

Lancashire / Re: Ship Pendragon of Liverpool - Symons
« on: Friday 07 September 12 09:50 BST (UK)  »
The "Pendragon" was a 215ft long, 1278 tonne iron sailing barque built in 1868.
The last owners were McDiarmid & Greenshields and was Liverpool registered.
The Pendragon was wrecked on 27/10/1896 after catching fire seven days out from Tocopilla Chile on the return to Falmouth. The cargo was nitrate of soda. None of the 21 crew were lost.
You can see an enquiry report at http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports/17235.asp

Hope you read this after 5 years of your original post!

Argyllshire / Re: The Burgesses of Inveraray
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Thommoje,
There could be a link between them.
The James McCulloch I'm after was born in 1709, whether he would be too young to be a burgess in 1727 ? He went on to become a Presbyterian minister in Moneyrea Antrim (licensed 1734 Templepatrick) and ended his days as minister of Kirkcolm Scotland.
He did have a brother Patrick a merchant of Larne, and their father was John McCulloch of Cairncastle, Antrim (a few miles from Larne) who was somehow descended from the McCullochs of Myrtoun.
Thanks again,
Greenfarmer.

Hi Thommoje,

Would you mind looking for any McCullochs in the above book who may have been Burgesses between 1635-1790.
In particular John, James, Patrick and William.

Many thanks,
Greenfarmer.

Wigtownshire / Re: MI's Kirkcolm Old Parish Churchyard

Looking for James Mcculloch (1711-1794) presbyterian minister of Kirkcolm 1744-1794,married Elizabeth Kyle in 1748 & had issue, one of whom married a "Craw" who had a daughter-Elizabeth Mcculloch Craw b.1791.d.Quebec 1928.
I know from "Fasti ecclisiae scoticanae" that James McCulloch's first ministry was in Moneyreagh Ireland which may point to the fact that he was born in Ireland.
His G'daughter Elizabeth, married Edward Black also  a presbyt. minister(Penninghame)who emigrated with her to Canada abt.1822 and founded St.Pauls Church Montreal after helping at St.Gabriel's Montreal.
The above James McCulloch was descended from "the McCulloch of Myrtoune"-he may have even had the title.
His G'grandaughter,Elizabeth McCulloch Craw Black married John Greenshields and she used headed writing paper with the appropriate McCulloch authority.See picture.
Would be grateful for any info. on the above mentioned.

Other Countries / Re: Danish West Indies (St.Thomas) 1800-1825.Duranty & Greenshields
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
The ship broker you found is Samuel Blain Greenshields my G Grandfather's brother, who married Helena Mary Robinson.Helena was born in 1835 St.Thomas Island and the only lead I have on her is on LDS microfilm for Danish West Indies Chancery records (1836 will of Joseph & Ellen(Wilson) Robinson).

The Quebec wedding was by licence at St Paul's Presbyterian, and Duranty is with the "Y".Although he was born in St.Thomas,he is down as a merchant from Liverpool and traded with Samuel Blain's father (Liverpool ship owner) and the Greenshields of Montreal (dry goods merchants).

Will try searches using different Duranty variations.

J.J. - From your crest,is your family motto by any chance that of the McCullochs i.e. "vi et animo"?
