Again the rootschat board has found an answer to my queries. Lou has fully answered my problem offline and I'm back on track with this family. The assistance from fellow researchers is amazing and it is fully shown on this message board.

Many thanks again Lou

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 census - Aspinall
« on: Monday 26 September 05 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please help with a lookup in the 1851 Census in Lancashire. I’m having trouble finding birth and marriage records for Elijah Aspinall b: abt 1817, and his wife Elizabeth Radcliffe b: abt 1822. There is a record of an Elijah Aspinall marrying in Bolton in Sept. Qtr. 1845, but no spouse is mentioned. Death certificates in Victoria Aust. show that he was born in Bolton and Elizabeth was born in Leeds.

Shipping records tell us that Elijah came to Australia in Feb. 1855, and his wife and 2 children, Betsey 11, and Thomas Elijah, 8, followed in Feb. 1858. The death certificate of Elijah is unreadable only at the Issue section and shows an illegible word followed by “children”, then “names not known”.

The word in question appears to have a dot on an ‘i’ and could be five, six, eight or nine. We can only account for four children and wondered if one had died before they left England.

By my reasoning they should show as a family in 1851, as the death certificate of son Thomas shows his birthplace as Manchester.

I hope there is enough info for someone to assist.

Thanks

Laois (Queens) / Re: Maryborough Prison??

Pat, thank you very much for that information. We have searched for years and had little to show for it...this site is amazing for the amount of help it generates from the members.

A second cousin has been researching the family for 20 years and is a member of The Genealogical Society of Victoria (GSV) and part of his report follows:

The GSV library have a copy of the Irish Transportation Records, and using the information on the printout for Joseph Day, I was able to access the film of the original hand written lists of prisoners from Queens Co convicted in 1849. These were the lists transcribed to produce the records you found. From this I was able to see that of 21 on that page,Joseph was one of nine tried by "The Lord Chief Justice Doherty", between 12th July and the end of the year. Perhaps more significantly, Joseph and one other, John Delany, were listed consecutively as being tried and convicted on the same day for malicious assault, and were both given seven years transportation.

It is a bit of a long shot, but I thought it possible that they were tried and convicted for the same incident, and that any trial details for one would give similar details for the other. As John Delany was listed as being transported on the "Robert Small", I followed his trail and found that he was transported to WA, arriving in Fremantle on 16 August 1853. His convict number is given as 2224 and he gained his ticket of leave on 15 December 1853. From these details we may be able to learn more about the details of his charge and the court proceedings. I will try to follow this up. By the way he died in 1892 in Newcastle and was unmarried. You never know, we may learn something about this Joseph Day by going sideways for a bit.

We now have just one more piece of the puzzle to go and we have heard rumours of a breakout in 1850, but have lost contact with the person who told us about it.

As they say - one door closes and another one slams in your face.

Thanks again Pat.

Laois (Queens) / Maryborough Prison??
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 14:39 BST (UK)  »
In 1849, my GGGrandfather, Joseph Day, was sentenced to 7 years transportation for malicious assault, (TR9, P139). Family notes and letters tell us that he was executed in Ireland after escaping from prison. We now believe that he was sent to Maryborough Prison, Laoghis, and I was hoping to find any record of his escape and subsequent death, whether legal execution or at the hands of soldiers or police as an escapee.

Facts at hand indicate that he would have escaped around June 1850. Can anyone suggest where I might find his trial record and any report of a prison breakout?

Library and FHS Lookups / Re: Civil Registration Birth Index 1984 - 2000

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your reply. I am in contact with her family and we have shared lots of info about the Blackbells. Unfortunately the family suffered losses in both WW1 & 2, as well as giving birth to more daughters than sons. The last chance of carrying the name further relies on just 3 of my nephews in Australia, 21, 17 & 5 years old. We believe that the name originated in Scotland and the first one jumped over the fence and married in Co.Durham in 1797. I have had contact from a lady here in Australia who is starting to research the Scottish side of her family and thinks there may be a connection. Time will tell.

Many thanks again Carol.

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for your reply. The same thing happened when I checked on Blackbell Electrical in UK, it was a merge of the partners names, Black and Bell. It would have been nice to find some more Blackbells in England as we are quite sure that the last one living is 88 and in Co.Durham.

Many thanks for your time.

I was doing my routine checks today for any new info on Blackbell from Co. Durham & Northumberland, when I noticed that there is a reference to a birth in the 1984 -2000 register.  We thought the Blackbell name had disappeared from UK, so this is a complete surprise.

Thanks

Thanks Tanja, I'm confident that we have all the Blackbell's and in the right families, although if that 8 was a zero, it would match our records.  ;D  Even so, it wouldn't be the first time that someone has "improved" their age to get a job, would it?   ;)

Hi Sue and Tanja,
Thanks for your replies.  John is married to Elizabeth and Thomas is John's nephew. Could the George J or T, be an S as in George SCOTT Blackbell? Our George Scott was born in Tynemouth and is known to have been a seaman, but it seems that he failed maths at school as he was born in 1841 (BVRI2) and is a brother of Thomas, nephew of John.

I hope that this George isn't a surprise that has slipped through the net!!

Thank you both for your time.
