Staffordshire / Re: Batkin/Ryles
« on: Tuesday 12 April 05 20:12 BST (UK)  »
I see that you have listed Ryles as one of your research interests. My name is Ryles and I live in the North East. The family originated in Stoke on Trent and my 5th great grandfather (Aaron Ryles) moved to Newcastle on Tyne and married a local girl in 1810. What do you know about Frances Ryles parentage? Give me some names and we may be able to assist each other.

Staffordshire / Stafford Assizes about 1825
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Looking for a source of information on the proceedings of the Stafford Assizes.
A relative was convicted for burglary and transported to Australia arriving 1827. Are there records of the court procedings from that time available? I have seen a list of prisoners from about that time which gave details of the sentence, victim of the crime and other references. Unfortunately the relative in question is not included on the list.

Family History Beginners Board / Reversion to maiden name after divorce
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 17:45 BST (UK)  »
A woman who divorced her husband, before WW2 I think, was provided with financial support by her family to go into business on the condition that she reverted to her maiden name. Presumably this involved some legal process. Can anyone point me in the direction of any relevant records?

Family History Beginners Board / Records of a divorce
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 17:39 BST (UK)  »
I know of an old gentleman who died about 3 years ago and was probably born before 1920. His mother divorced her husband before the second World War I believe. Is their any centralised records of decrees nisi and are any available on line?

Thanks everyone for their help.
I had my first visit rcently to Derbyshire/Staffs and visited the library in Stoke on Trent. Unfortunately the archives section was closed. Where can I find parish records for that area? Are any of the parisgh records available on line - particularly those for Norton in the Moors? I live near Newcaslte upon Tyne.

Thank you linnet for your help.
I am close to a major breakthrough in my research and would be grateful for some more help.

Moses Ryles had some siblings and I would like their dates of birth or baptism

Aaron (Ephraim) Ryles born abt. 1789
John Ryles born about 1791
Martha Ryles born about 1793
any more ?

Moses married (date and spouse unknown) and had at least one child I believe born 1810 and called Hannah. If you can find a date of birth or baptism for Hannah with Moses as the father that is the breakthrough I need.

Hannah was convicted at the Stafford Assizes and transported to Australia arriving 1827 age 17 years.

trying to find a record of the birth or marriage of Moses Ryles (Riles, Royles,Riles or Ryals) born about 1787. His parents were Ephraim Ryles and Maria Malkin who were married at Norton in the Moors, Staffs in about 1783. Moses had a younger brother Aaron (Ephraim) who was born about 1789 I think in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent - I have no confirmation of the date or place of birth for Aaron.
