Have you considered the DNA route?
Looks like baby Sweet (whom I won't name) may have been born in Holborn?
Hi was Kate in St Pancras in 1891 census, and with them is a John James Sweet registered March qtr 1891 Pancras mmn Smith
Census ref RG12/119/47/6
Keyboard86
Where did you get Rebecca as her mothers name? The only 1871 entry with a mother Rebecca & father William was born in Hunslet Yorkshire
Marriages March qtr 1858
Causley Anne Elizabeth Kensington
Smith William Kensington 1a 81
One of the witnesses on the 1888 marriage appears to be Ann Elizabeth Smith - William is shown as deceased
QuoteBorn as Kate Florence Smith to a William Smith and mother's name is Rebecca. To help, I know Kate was married to John Sweet on 21/2/1888. Kate later re-married to a George Miller.
When was she born and where? freebmd has 2 births for that name - 1859 and 1869 - both old enough to have married in 1888
From the correct birth reg - you can get Rebecca's maiden name and trace the marriage to find her fathers name and occupation
That will enable you to search for her pre-marriage to see whether the story of her background is true
