Ireland / JOHN DAVIS 1858 / JOHN DAVIS 1882
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 03:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I think I'm best to post hear as Ireland is my last point of reference to date.

I'm looking for the birth records of John William Davis B. Ab 1882 and John Davis B. Ab 1858.

John Davis (1858) was a Private in the 105th regiment KOYLI, married Jane McCay in Clooney Parish Ireland in 1879. I believe he then served in India. His father was Thomas Davis

John William Davis (1882) Also served in India and married there to Daisy Beatrice Eates in 1907.
They had a son Lewis Manfred Davis born in 1909 in Cawnpore, India and three other children, Gwen, Hector and William.

I have searched all the British, Irish and Overseas databases, including those specific to those who served in India, but I've come up with no other information to further my search. Hoping someone might be able to help.

Thanks, Caroline

Renfrewshire / Re: Port Glasgow Cemetery- Common Ground?

Ah I see. Didn't consider the idea of a long plot, how sad. There was no notice for this relatives death, she was just a baby and her parents were quite young. Seems like there isn't much hope of narrowing down any further a place of rest.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply Skoosh. Being buried in the 'poor' section would make sense, hence no head stone. Would the 'common ground'  then refer to a particular section of the cemetery? and I still thought that they would have recorded details or a plot number, even if it was the poor section :(

Renfrewshire / Port Glasgow Cemetery- Common Ground?
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 12:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I rang the Burial Office today in search of a plot number for a relative who passed in 1910. I was told that there was no number or record of where she was buried, just that she was buried on common ground? Not sure exactly what common ground is? I am pretty sure that her grave would not have a headstone either, does this mean I won't be able to find the exact location of her grave?  I live in Australia so I'm not familiar with the layout of Port Glasgow Cemetery, but was hoping to be able to visit a few graves in the future.

Thanks

Caroline

I know what you mean! Is there a particular release time? I haven't been able to find one. I'm in Australia, but I wouldn't think that would cause a delay :(

Europe / Automatic language translation
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 05:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, may have already been mentioned but just thought I'd offer my small amount of wisdom.

If you are searching for online information and find that the results appear in a foreign language, you can download 'Google Chrome'. It's an updated version of the Google search engine. When you view a web page which is in a language other than English it will automatically offer you the choice to translate to whatever language you like (a translate tab appears just below the address bar). It makes searching foreign records just a little easier :)

Thanks for your reply, I would never have thought of Walenty, but I did a quick polish record search and turns out it's a definite possibility. Now that you mention it, the maiden name does look like Corwenka, I'll keep looking.

Thanks again.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Scottish death certificate- Polish names
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 04:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Unfortunately the certificate I have is a poor quality downloaded version. Help deciphering the Parents names for Elizabeth Klimasiefski would be greatly appreciated. They're Polish names, with the Last name Krupa. Mothers maiden name possibly ends in "venka" or "wenka".

Thanks.

Europe / Re: Poland, help getting started. KLIMASIEFSKI

Thanks for both your replies. As yet I have had no luck with the Klimasiefski last name beyond the scottish records, and with Klimaszewski being a bit more common, its hard knowing if I'm going in the right direction with such little information. I will definitely see what I can find regarding Ukraine records.

Thanks

Caroline
