Yorkshire (West Riding) / Haldanes of Wakefield
« on: Saturday 12 November 11 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle was an amateur genealogist in the 1960s & 1970s. I've been  researching my own family tree (Mulholland) which comes down from the Haldane's of Wakefield via my great grandmother, Annie Schofield (nee Haldane) on my father's side.

From my late uncle's papers I have an A3 sized genealogical tree that starts with John Haldane of Perthshire (that sounds like a catch-all) and his 2 sons - John Haldane (Melton Mowbray?) and the more detailed lineage of James Haldane (b.1740 d. May 7 1843) married ( Aug. 1 1768) Ann Shaw of Wakefield (b.1740 d. Dec 8 1791).

My photoshop scans of the image are some 6Mb & good quality.....email address please.

Any takers ?

Thank you. ' Sinclair ' has masonic and Hugenot connotations; it comes from the French St. Clair; Sinclairs were involved in the Ulster Plantation. There is a reason its a patronymic.  See - http://www.sinclairgenealogy.info/ireland & here - http://www.breadyancestry.com/index.php?id=35.

The name Sinclair given to me and my father has a significance in Ulster that so far I'm missing.

The census records for Townland ' Ballymakeown ' for 1911 & 1901 are annotated by the enumerator as Obin Street  which can only be in Craigavon for the Drumcree Parish.

I'm wondering if the person at the GRO misread the name ' Brenda '. I cannot find any instance of the name in the records ; let alone for  a Mulholland

Onwards

Hello there

My antecedents are linearly on the male side -

1. Henry Sinclair Mulholland (dob 3.2.1923)@ Ilkley. My father.
2.William Mulholland, Clergyman (dob 7.2.1878) @ Townplan Ballymakeown. Breagh, Armagh. Parish of Drumcree. Postal address Obin Street, Craigavon. Married GE Schofield @ Bridlington 1911. My grandfather born in same house, parents still in residence in 1901 & 1911 censuses.
3. John Mulholland, Tailor (dob 1830) married Jane Armstrong (dob 1846) on 27th Feb. 1866, Christ Church, Belfast. Resided at 33 Brown Street, Belfast but moved to farm(?) at Obin Street Craigavon before birth of son in 1878. He was my great-grandfather. Jane Armstrong's father given as Leathern or Leathem Armstrong, Farmer. John Mulholland switched from tailoring to farming before 1901 census (Retired Farmer). Did the son-in-law take over the Armstrong farm ?
4. John Mulholland, Weaver from the marriage certificate in 3. above. My great-great-grandfather.

Sadly all Irish census records for the 1800s are gone.

Can anyone tell me what the significance is of the patronymic ' Sinclair ' in my name & my father's as well ?

John Mulholland and Jane Mulholland (nee Armstrong) had daughter Anne Mulholland dob 28.2.1875 & dod 18.7.1877. She died at Downpatrick, there was a Coroner's Inquest & her death was attended by her aunt Brenda Mulholland.
I cannot trace a Brenda Mulholland anywhere. Help.

I am trying to locate a copy of FA Mulholland's ' The Mulholland Family Tree- Illustrated with 9 Charts ' published in 1937 by the Ontario Press in Toronto.

Any information much welcome on tracing John Mulholland Tailor or his father John Mulholland Weaver.

Richard HS Mulholland
