Hi There
I wonder if you can help as I am trying to solve a riddle regarding my Great Grandfather's brother, a man by the name of Joshua Pollard.
He was a bad apple in & out prison many times. In the census of 1911 (after he has already been declared dead by two his Children on their marriage certs) he turns up in Edmondthorpe, Leicestershire living with a son James William Pollard.
Also in the house were a Smith family, they were James's in laws, one member of the household was a Child called Beatrice Smith. I cannot say for sure when she was born but I have estimated 1894 ish!
I have found a marriage in 1907 as follows
June Qtr 1907
Beatrice Smith & Samule Christian Short
Melton M 7a 690
I am guessing that this is your Samuel even if they have his name spelt differently.
For it to be right Beartrice, she had sisters Laura, Alice, brother John, William & peter that died in 1947 I think.
Now I have been told a story that Joshua Pollard got in with a man called Christian & they robbed a family of jewels & hid them in a magpie's nest near Cribb's cottage.
They were whipped with a cat o' nine tails & sent to prison. So far I have been looking for this story thinking that the Christian is a surname, but maybe it's a first name.
Sorry to potentially diss your ancestor, but I have to ask. Does anything I say make any sense?
Eddie
