Hello Bryant

Thanks for your reply. My last post was over a year ago and I must admit, I found my missing Great Grandmother several months ago. For some unknown reason, they left London and moved to Southport and she died in 1911 aged 35, of cancer. The reason for not being able to find her was that her family were Londoners and my search was mainly in the south of the UK. I wasn't looking anywhere else. I know that my Great Grandfather was still in the North for some time after her death as I have a few postcards, sent to my Grandfather, by him - posted from Manchester. This could explain the Lanchashire Fusiliers!

Do you know where I go to request military service records?

Hello Cate

I know that your posts on this thread were in January but I've just been reading through the Somerset posts (as I live in Taunton) and came across yours. It looks as though your research is coming on a pace and although perhaps not relevant now, the following information may be of interest;

The "Tything of Knopp" is actually "Knapp". Knapp is a small hamlet near North Curry and about 5 or 6 miles from Taunton.

Creech St Michael is a village on the outskirts of Taunton - about 3 miles.
Similarly, Hatch Beauchamp is a small village about 7 or 8 miles from Taunton although it is possibly closer to the small town of Ilminster.

The Parish of St. Mary Magdelene is basically central Taunton. St Mary's is the main church in Taunton and for census purposes, it simply means the entire town centre.

One of your ancestors was "born Bradford, Somerset". I would assume that this is Bradford On Tone. A village about about 4 miles from Taunton, just off the A38 between Taunton and Wellington.

Dulverton was mentioned a few times. This is a town about 25 miles from Taunton, on the Devon border.

Of course, it may not be Penfield Street, just the enumerators handwriting may be awful

Hi carol,

Penfield Street is not a name that springs to mind as still being in existance but I may be wrong. What Parish does the census return show and I'll have a look at some maps and see where it is or where it was.

Wow - some interesting leads to follow up - thank you.

Nellie is a strange one as she shows on the 1881 and 1891 census as Nellie although her name was actually Eliza.

I know this to be true as William's death certificate shows informant as daughter, Eliza Neve. She shows on the 1901 census living elsewhere in London (as Eliza) and also her birth certificate. It makes you wander why people put nick names on something as official as a census return.

This is the only reason why I would query your suggestion for her marriage as I assume you would have to use your real name for registration.

For the sake of a few quid, I will order both certificates.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Karen (and Pam)

I traced the family a few years ago and have print outs of 1891 and 1901 but something made me look again at 1901. I knew that Stanley had been written in but I only spotted the other name this morning! (how stupid am 1?)

I've got to that frustrating stage (which I'm sure many of us are at) that I can't do much more until 2011 (or is it 1st Jan 2012??)

Annie was my GGrandmother and died young in 1911. William (father) died later in 1901 but as for the others - not a trace!

Thanks again

Thank you Pam,

I had a hunch it was Ernest, glad someone else thinks the same.

Thank youfor your help and speedy reply.

Makes you wander why Stanley and Ernest were added in!

Thanks again

Hello Everyone.

Does anyone have the 1901 returns for Deptford, St Paul on CD? I can view the original document on line but extra family members have been entered after the form was filled in and I can't make out a name properly.

If someone can view Piece 531, Folio 5, page 1

My family is the Neve family - although they have been entered as Neeve.

There will be;

William (head)
Mary (wife)
Annie (dau)
William (son)
Amy Aldous (dau)
Herbert Aldous (son in law)

Written in faint writing above some of the names is Stanley and one other (aged 9) that I can't make out.

Some sites transcribe the information but the ones I have seen so far have broadly inaccurate transcriptions of the names that I do know so I cant trust them

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ringwarrior

I have just done a large wiring job for the Parish Office and Vicarage of St Mary's Church. Give them a ring - they may be able to help with records or at least point you in the right direction.
