We are definitely same family, thanks for your post. I would love to speak/write to you, compare what we both have. The family photo would be great to see. I have the six births for Barbara and George, but little more on who they married and the more recent relatives. I am in Auckland NZ, where are you, and which of the six children do you belong to?
Hear from you soon
Regards
Mark

Perthshire / Family names - Dixey/Dixie/Dixi/Dixy.....Wedderspoon & Kennedy

Hi there from a new member in New Zealand. I am hoping someone here can help me. I am at odds with my ancestors. My GG Grandfather John Dixie was born July 1817 in Perth. His parents William Dixie and Barbara Wedderspoon ( dau of William Wedderspoon, labourer in Perth), married 11 Jun 1794in Perth ( as per Parish records). William was a ferrier as part of the Queens Regiment of Dragoons at the time of his wedding. I can find no births for any siblings of Johns. Although possible Wm and Barbara had no children that I can trace until 1817, 23 years seems a long time.
It would appear that John did have an older sister Mary. We have a small family bible that was given to John ( it seems) when he joined the army in 1837. It basically said to follow God in all you do, love your loving sister Mary.
I do have the 1841 census for Perth. It shows one Barbara Dixey living S Mithven Street, aged 70.She said she was born in Perth. Also living with her was one William Kennedy aged 20, occ blacksmith app.( which his grandfather Wm Dixie was). Well I am assuming Barbara is his grandmother, and that Mary above married a Mr Kennedy. I cant find anything for either Mary Dixie/Dixey nor Mary Kennedy.
What I am looking for is anything for these families. I can find nothing of Barbara’s family, nor do I know of Johns siblings if he had any ( I am assuming Mary is his sister though). John joined the army in 1837 and came down under in the 1840s with the regiments. He eventually married Rachel Vincent ( another untraceable family) in Victoria Australia in May 1858. From there on through my Dixey line I can follow.
I was in Perth Christmas 2009 and was hoping to go to the church in his parish, which I was told was on Methven Street. Alas it is no longer in use and in quite a state, it needs lenty of repairs.
Anything would be great to help me
Thanks
Mark, Auckland New Zealand

Dumfriesshire / Janet Downie/Creighton/Crichton/Morton b) c1840

Greetings from New Zealand. This is my first post. Can someone help me find details of my gg grandmother, one Janet Downie and her family? She had an illegitimate daughter, my g gmother one Barbara Downie born 1864 in Bainboard in Balmaghie Parish ( as per births entry). I am unable to locate Janet’s parents. Her death certificate here in New Zealand as advised by her husband states parents as James and Ellen Downie ( Ellen’s maiden name unknown). However when Barbara married here in New Zealand she advised that her mother’s maiden name was Creighton. I have been unable to locate anything along those lines. I am sure Janet was born in the Moniaive area, and that this is the area she lived as a single girl, and also after she married William Morton in 1872 in Cumbria England. Janet was a dairymaid in 1864 when Barbara was born ( as per birth cert). Move along until the 1881 census and Janet together with husband and three children from her marriage are living at 1 Dunreggan ,Moniaive. Janet’s birthplace on this census was given as Moniaive. Two of the 3 children shown on the census record were also born in Moniaive.
Barbara was a dairymaid at Lochurr, Glencairn.
Now I find the 1841 census and I’m confused. I can find a Janet Downie born abt 1840 living in Dunreggan Village. Also in the house were a William and Mary Crichton ( ages 65 & 75) together with Margret Crichton aged 30yrs. Could Margret be Janet’s mother, and Janet took Creighton as her maiden name, but Barbara’s father was a Downie ( hence the name on Barbara’s birth certificate).
So my request -is anyone from the Moniaive/Glencairn area able to do any searching of records for me? Because of what appears to be a string of illegitimate births details of my Scots family are scarce, or am I just looking in the wrong places? If health allows I plan to visit the area in September or October this year.
Many thanks, Mark
