Hi all,

Does anyone know what this occupation is?  It's something 'maker' but I can't figure out the first part.

Thanks

What's strange is they read banns three times before the marriage, which means the Great Waltham one would come to four!!  ???

Hi all, I can't believe I'm re-visiting this post after 14 years!!  I'm still stuck with the Josolyne's - I still can't find the births of the siblings, I know they were born between 1750 and 1763 because of other records I have found - I'm starting to think that the parish the siblings were born in doesn't have surviving parish records anymore ....

Recently a record appeared on Ancestry - it was the marriage record for John Josolyne and Mary Mumford but it had Great Waltham, Essex as the place of marriage:

Marriage Date:   14 Jan 1787
Marriage Place:   Great Waltham, Essex, England

So now it really is confusing .... Where did they come from?  and where did they actually marry?

Any pointers would be welcome !!

Thanks
Anna

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Gilbert MARSHALL c 1800 Convict to Australia

Hi all,

Im also tracing an ancestor called Stowell/Stawell Marshall (born circa 1770, place unknown) although mine married a Jane Smith in London in 1824... anyway, I came across the following on Ancestry.co.uk:  Richard Marshall married Elizabeth Stowell of St Erme, 11 April 1638.  Source:  Cornwall Registers of Marriages 1572 - 1812.

Im wondering if this marriage was the start of the Stowell Marshall name that seems to crop up throughout the following generations... I have seen in other branches of my family the surname of a wife being used as first names in furture generations.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / St Bart's, Holborn - buried in middle aisle
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 09:58 GMT (UK)  »
Morning all :-)

Does anyone know if there are records online that give details of who is buried inside St Bart's, Holborn?  I have come across an ancestor, who according to his Will, wanted to be buried next to his wife under the middle aisle of the church (her burial is confirmed in church records on Ancestry).  His name was Benjamin Cooper, died/buried 11 October 1786.

Also, why would someone be allowed to be buried in a church rather than the graveyard, his occupation was Goldsmith, so no occupational links with the church.

Thanks
Anna

The Common Room / Re: Name on marriage cert confusion
« on: Sunday 23 December 12 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone :-)

So the confusion continues....

Today, I found a Marriage Allegation on Ancestry for Thomas Herbert.... it says:

8 May 1799
Thomas Herbert of the Parish of Fulham, Middx a bachelor above the age of 21.

Intends to marry Grace Medhurst of the same Parish and above the age of 21...

I can't find an actual marriage for them in London, only the Allegation.

but we also have the following:

Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence

25 April 1800
Thomas Herbert - subject detail - Bach 24+ mariner Seaford
Grace Medhurst - spouse detail - sp 18+ otsp wcof Robt.M clocksmith Thos a Beckett Cliffe Lewes

Sponsors: T.H.  John Holman yeo otsp - SRS 25

and the marriage at Seaford, East Sussex
1st May 1800
Thomas Herbert - bach and Grace Medhurst - sp botp (lic)

It looks to me, and I might be wrong, that there was opposition to their marriage, so they decided to run off to London to do the deed, but at some point afterwards they returned to Seaford (without going through the actual marriage in London) and were married a year later with the consent of her father!!  An expensive exercise I would have thought, a Marriage Allegation in London and then marrying by License in Seaford...  They settled in Seaford for a number of years, moving back to London sometime after 1816 (when their son Robert was born) but before 1827 as that's when Grace died... what a confusing family!!
