My grandmother, Joyce Violet Thomas, was aboard the Staffordshire, and was taken to Stornoway on the Sama. Her aunt took down her account of events from being aboard ship to her return to London, and the file is attached. I'm sure all will find it interesting. My late father added some extra info about the attack and the Sama.
Thank you. This is brilliant. I've passed it on to my cousins

Hi Chris

I stumbled across this thread while researching the pilot of a Focke Wulf Condor, which claimed the sinking of a ship on the same date and in the same area as the Staffordshire was attacked on 28 March 1941. There is an image in the photo album belonging to 'my' man, showing a ship under attack and captioned with the aircraft crew names. I am no expert on ships but it looks to me like it could be the Staffordshire. The crew of the aircraft were: Commander Lieutenant Robert Maly, Pilot Oberfeldwebel Karl Gendner, Radio Operator Wiedmann, Radio Operator ? (illegible), Flight Engineer Gollon. The aircraft belonged to 3. Staffel of KG 40.

Best wishes
Tim O.
Thank you, Tim. That is brilliant

My friend, kindly, did visit the cemetery and found the correct spot with the use of the photo that my grandmother took. The gravestones either side that were in the photo were there which was why she knew she had the correct spot, but my great-great-grandmother’s gravestone was gone. She checked with an official but the grave did not show on the records. Her final touch was to place a bouquet of flowers and take a photo for me. I was so touched.

Hi chrish53

Did you follow up on the link I posted here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=683035.0

if not goggle search for "English Cemetery Cairo" for other suggestions and this

https://lydiasmithwatsonyear.com/2016/01/17/american-and-british-cemeteries-in-cairo/

I had forgotten I had asked this before! I just have traced the picture which I cannot post as every attempt to reduce it's size fails which results in me getting more frustrated. Thanks Dawn for the help my friend is now fairly sure she knows which cemetery and has offered, less her, to have a throrough look for me and to take a new photo.

Can anyone suggest how I can find the grave for someone who died in 1915 in Cairo. I have the Consular death 1911-15, and traced the negative of a photo taken in about 1924 when the family returned to the UK. I know someone who lives in Cairo who has offered to visit and take a photo for me if I can trace where the grave is.

Attached is the best copy I can make of the negative, the grave is my Great-great-Grandmother and is on the right of the picture.

Check the address given in this further report (halfway down column 5) against the address you have for the family in 1911.  http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4013486/4013489/31/

This looks spot on! I at first I thought this could not be right as they lived in Cubits Court, forgetting that they had moved by the 1911 census. Once again thank you everybody.

Would this be your man 3/4 of the way down column 4. http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4114868/4114871/40/
A search throws up references to bandmaster William Howells of Clarence Rd, Llandilo being the father with another son William awarded the military medal.

Edit: The medal card for Private. Henry Howells 4152 Welsh Regiment would appear be a good match for this man given the references in the welsh papers to the Dardanelles, a reported promotion to Lance Corporal, plus the personal recollections.

The newspaper report at first I was dubious as William was a stonemason. However, my cousin informs me William was also a musician so this could be correct as the last record I have is 1911 Census and who knows what happened up to 1915. Comparing the picture in that report with the only photo I have that includes him that was taken in 1944 does show a marked similarity so I am now 80% sure it is him. I shall now go to the Military record to see if any more details correspond.

Thank you very much, most appreciated.

Something else to bear in mind is that he was born as plain Henry on 4/4/1893 Llandilo - both census he appears in shown him as plain Henry too even though younger siblings are shown with 2 Christian names.   It's possible he could have enlisted as plain Henry Howells too.

This is quite true, his birth certificate also shows him as just Henry Howells. When the Valentine middle name came in sadly we may never know. However, his marriage certificate and death certificate all show Valentine. He was known as Val, this I know from newspapers where he was shown as attending funerals where he was noted as Val Howells. On one occasion: Val Howells, his wife May and son Spencer (my Dad who was Henry Spencer). Added info. I have looked for Val and Valentine Howells.

There's a "snippet only" on FindMyPast under "H V Howell, soldier No. 891313" with an Egyptian link

When I get round to renewing my FindMyPast membership, I shall have a look at that. I am building a store of records I need to look at.

Thank you.
