Dear All,

Thank you for your prompt advice and help. To fill in a few of the blanks. The blue marines,,according to Wiki, were the artillery element of the Royal Marines. John Kenny was born in Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny Ireland between 1840 and 1842. He was orphaned as a young child and apparently then joined the military. One of my other relations said it could have been as young as 8 years old and this was because he was an orphan. He met Elizabeth Quine although her surname could be Gunne and they were married in Malew in 1871. They had a son John Thomas Kenny who was born in November 1874. In 1875 they left the Isle of Man and went to Sydney Australia. John's sister Mary my great great grandmother had in 1862 sponsored him to Australia as an assisted immigrant. On his shipping record he is listed as a labourer. He died in 1890. I looked at the Isle of Man census on Ancestry and couldn't find him. I'll look where you suggest. There was another John Kenny who fought in the Maori Wars. he was originally from Ireland but came to Melbourne and then joined up.
Regards
Jane

Thank you for your prompt response. I would assume that his father John being a pensioner means he was receiving a pension for his military service. How would I find out about this as I don't even know his regiment other than the Blue Marines? (If that is even accurate)

I am looking for the baptism of John Thomas Kenny in St Mary's Castletown in Nov 1874. His father John Kenny was supposedly a Blue Marine who fought in the Maori Wars and lost a leg. His mother was Elizabeth Quine. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Other Countries / INDIA William Hanson
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 02:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

My 2 x g grandfather William Hanson lived in India and married Christina Francisca Longden in 1856  at Bellary. At the time he was 25 years old and employed as an assistant Overseer of the roads dept. When their first child was born in 1857 he was a private in the 3rd Madras Europeans and there is a Pte William Hanson from that regiment who is on the Indian Mutiny Roll. Then when later children are born in early 1860's his occupation is given as Police Inspector. He moves to Poona by the time my g grandfather James Masson Hanson is born in 1867. The baptismal record is hard to read but it appears to say not employed. From his wife's second marriage details William died in India in 1870. James Masson accompanied his mother to Australia. All the other children had died in India.

I would like to find out about William, where he was born, service record, employment and his latter life. How would I be able to do this? I live in Australia so a visit to the British  Library and the Kew records is not an option.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello All,

My 3 x g grandfather Richard Longden, according to his children's baptismal records and his death notice in the Times of India was a pensioned Sgt Maj late of 4th Regiment  Madras Native Infantry. He died on 30 Dec 1866 in Arcot Madras. Where would I be able to find out more about his military career the pension he was paid and his family? All I know is that is that he was 73 when he died.

I live in Australia so going to the British Library or the Kew records office are not an option.

Any help would be much appreciated
