The Common Room / Re: errors on trees

Thanks for the explanation Guy.

After I had been researching for a while I also had problems with some local registrars offices refusing to supply certificates for family history purposes. This would have been around 2000/1. It wasn't across the board so I can only presume some were making up their own rules. It was mainly those is cities and large towns, the rural ones remained obliging

That is interesting.... Guy's first point about the general public being allowed to view the registers at a Registrar's Office.
When I first started family history 16 years ago and had reached the point when I needed to purchase certificates I had no idea how to go about it so telephoned my local registrars office for advice. I specifically recall asking the question, did I need to visit personally to look through the registers, but was categorically told that the public where not allowed to. However I do remember seeing some of the travelling researchers on the Heir Hunters TV show being allowed to view them but it always came across as if they had been given the privilege as a huge favour.

If they have survived you could try the Petty Sessions records to see if the mother applied for child maintenance.

Occasionally child maintenance cases were mentioned in Newspapers

Ah! Just spotted something. I notice on FindMyPast the date range for their SWB collection is 1914-1920, whilst my mans RAF service record states his SWB was issued in 1921. Wonder if that is the reason, not all of the records have been included?

Thanks for your reply Ken.

Poor transcribing could certainly explain a few of the missing records. But I do wonder if some of the originals have been lost.
I am researching a man who was in the RFC/RAF and his airmans records, which are included in the newly released collection on FindMyPast, clearly state he was given a SWB yet there is no record on either FindMyPast or A. Or does the fact he was in the RAF make a difference? Are those records separate from those awarded to army/navy personnel?

World War One / Silver War Badge collections

Hi Everyone

Please can anyone tell me if there is more than one set of records for the Silver War Badge, maybe held in different respositories?

Both FindMyPast & A have a collection but on occasion I am finding a record for a man on one site but not the other and vise versa. And in some cases, although I have found a reference to a man being awarded a SWB from other documents, I can't find a record on either site.
many thanks
MOIRA

Thanks for the explanation of the remarks and the link, jds1949, bookmarked link for future reference.

So it would appear he was held as a reserve but according to your link that would not have been until after 1918, so its the two year gap between 1916 and 1918 that remains a mystery.

He doesn't seem to have been awarded a Silver War Badge, so I am curious about the nature of his "illness", which was bad enough for him to be sent home but not to stop him from being in the army altogether.
