It's possible that Edward put the name Edward for his father on the marriage certificate, for the sake of having something there and putting labourer is quite vague and generic. What sources have you seen that say 1814-1818? On the census's I've seen it always says 1820/1821.

I am tending to agree with the census year of 1829 but looking towards April rather than November.  That would fit the date placements we can see although if he lied about his father he may also have lied about his age.

The 1814-1818 date came from his great-grandniece Dorothy Clarke who died in 2009.

My family comes from Edwards son Henry (who drowned when his ship the City of Lincoln was wrecked in 1905)

Thank you for that detail.  We had the event but not the name.  Can we continue in Private Messages?

The Dartmouth tailor in the 1851 census is the one who may be the father.  If EH was left on a door step how do we account for the name and other dates?

"Born in the Parish of Sidwell in Exeter on Nov 13 or 14 1820 he had no idea of his parentage and during his early days was in the charge of a nurse, a Mrs Maria Kirslake, who refused to tell him anything beyond his name and age."

Now I can't find Maria Kirslake in that area.  If he truely did not know his parentage how did he get that name?  Edward Harris is not a common name in Exeter but is in Dartmouth.  All circumstantial I know.  He was also "At the age of 9« years he was apprenticed to a basket maker at Crediton "  Apprenticeships did not come free and had to be paid for.  I wonder if there is an apprenticeship bond?  He was at Exeter market at the age of 17 so probably served the full 7-year apprenticeship.  He was at Taunton around Jun 1837.  This suggests a birth before Jun 1820 and rules out the Nov 1820 date.  The Full Age on marriage also supports a birth May 1820 or earlier.  The other source suggested 1814-1818.

Who was the aunt you mentioned?  Family tales (my wife's side) have a not wholly different tale but one that figures on bastardy.  Now why did Edward declare that his father was also Edward Harris, labourer, if he did not know who his parents were?

Remember, the obituary was written by Elizabeth Long, nee Harris, b 1855 and didn't relate the first marriage date to her brother b1841.  It is likely that she missed out other facts too.

The obituary was written by Mrs Long, his youngest daughter.  She got the date of marriage wrong by 10 years despite her eldest brother being with them in 1901 and he was 59 when his father died.

She omitted any mention of wives 2 and 3.

There is no birth registration in Exeter or Crediton.  Other sources have a dob between 1814 and 1818.  His marriage certificate puts him as Full Age which suggests a dob before 9 May 1820.  The Edward Harris born 1818 in Dartmouth could be the man.

The only discordant note I have is that his father was given as a Labourer in 1841 but The EH in Dartmouth was a tailor in 1851.  There are no census that have both Edward Harris on at the same address.

Mae, I know more about Edward Harris than stated in the obituary.  I traced him to Bradford in the 1841 census immediately before he married. I have also traced his 2nd and 3rd wives.

You can discount the Edward Harris mentioned above.

I have also eliminated several of the obituary items.

I shall be online after 7pm tonight.
