In the 1940s I used to walk to school ( St Cuthberts Primary) from Weardale Avenue, past the once Methodist chapel, between the local constable's house  and the CooP store. At some stage the chapel served as an ante-natal clinic.

In August 1959 , aged 17 yrs, I started work as a "boy Clerk" for the Northern Gas Board.
I was situated in the offices on the first floor looking out to the Harbour Commission building opposite.
The ground floor was for the gasfitters who installed and repaired domestic gas appliances.

My first task of every day was to collect the daily mail open and sort and distribute it.
The featured building in this topic in my day was the gas appliances show room.

The main offices ( including chief accountant and deputy) were in building on corner of
Plessey Rd and Bridge St.

I put up pay packets for manual workers and handed them over when they came knocking
on my little hatch. I also paid out the workers over at the gasworks.

Some fond memories, but not a lot !

Michael ( now emigrated to Scotland- for non-political reasons

British children off to farming in Canada/Australia !

There existed several government supported schemes to help prepare
 children for the new life.

I have seen old photos of children in classroom being taught how to
milk cows. Wooden cows were used.

But I don't remember name of book.   Maybe Philip's archives can help!

 Origins of Blyth/Cowpen street names....

Someones comprehensive project on street name origins lies in the small cubby room on first floor
in Blyth Library, listing ships, celebreties, gold fields, etc

Northumberland / Re: Tracing family from Ireland to the North East.

As SelDen mentioned earlier, some North-East parish priests added additional info
 on baptisms and marriages.
eg  home parish in Ireland, maiden names of bride and groom and both their parents.

Myself I got a nice surprise on C1891 when my great grandfather, instead of just " born Ireland" in previous censuses, was listed as born Co Sligo.

Trivia: I was baptised at St Cuthberts, Cowpen
