Kerry / Re: Help wanted - Nelligan family
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I'm still here, although haven't used the forum recently. Can you tell me more about Dorothy Nelligan so I can see if it's someone in our tree. My wife's grandmother was Doris Neligan but it's been a while since I looked at that side of the tree and I don't recall a Dorothy Nelligan off the top of my head.

James,

Curtis Stevenson was my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.  He is buried in Queens Road Cemetery in Croydon, and his grave marker shows him as being a Captain in the 2nd South Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps.  There is a window to his memory in Southwark Cathedral which I visited yesterday.  As he is not a direct ancestor, I haven't really spent too much time on him, but I have become a little intrigued! Whilst visiting the cemetery last week, I looked for any traces of Oaklands, however London Road obviously bares no resemblance to what it did in the mid to late 1800's.  There is an Oaklands Avenue, off London Road, which may or may not have been where their house was located.  My family tree has no Thornton connections that I know of. My family tree is on ancestry, if you have access.  The wife was called Sarah and she died at Oaklands in 1913.

I have some photographs of his gravestone and the window, but they appear to be too large to attach to this post.

Hello,  I know this was first posted some time ago, but are you still looking into Oaklands?  Oaklands, 450 London Road, Thornton Heath was the home or a relation of mine, Capt Curtis Stevenson.  He died there in 1894 and him wife in 1913.

I have amended the original message, so it reads true, I hope...

Sorry, I got myself confused here!  To clarify (correct) the initial information, the only Mary is the mother of William James Marshall.  She is the one who I think may be a Gailbraith.

When I said that William Marshall died in 1943, in his 90's, it was actually his father, James, who died in his 90's,but in  in 1933.

William did die in 1943, however the gravestone shows that he was only 53 years old.

Sorry for the errors, I read the submission twice, but still missed it!

Down / HELP - Marshall & Martin
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find details of my great grandfather, and great grandmother  His name was William James Marshall, and he was born in County Down. Her name was Isabella Martin.

The information I have is as follows:
The 1901 census shows William living in the townland of Island Bane.  He is shown as 12 years old (born about 1889 in Co Down).  He is living with his parents, James Marshall (age 50) and Mary Marshall (age 35).  Both shown as being born in Co Down.

The 1901 census shows Isabella living in Ringdufferin, as a 12 year old servant of Charles & Mary Breeze. She is shown as Bella Martin, but I think that it's the same person.

I have their marriage certificate from 7th February 1908, when they married at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Killyleagh.  William is shown as living in Ballymacarron, and his father is shown as James Marshall. Mary's father is shown as Thomas Martin. She is shown as living in Clea, and still shown as a servant.

The 1911 census shows him in the townland of Ringdufferin, as a 22 year old.  (Ringdufferin is where my grandmother was born, in 1914). He is now shown with his wife, Isabella Martin, who is also shown on his marriage certificate.

I know that William Marshall died on 30th April 1943, and I have a photograph of his grave stone in Killyleagh. I have no idea where Mary died, or is buried.  I have heard that she died in 1946, quite old,
I am trying to find out more about William & Mary's birth/baptism, and also details of their parents.  I know that William's father was James Marshall, and mother was Mary, but I am trying to find out more.  I have a lead that says the mother was a Mary Gailbrath, but I am unable to confirm this.  I have tried to order a birth certificate from the HSE in Dublin, but after three weeks it still hasn't arrived!

I know nothing about any possibilities for Isabella Martin's mother.

Is anyone able to provide confirmation of birth details of  William Marshall and Mary Martin, or confirmation that William's mother was indeed Mary Gailbraith.
Any information at all around Isabella Martin's mother would also help a great deal.
I am finding it quite hard to find Irish records, unless I have very specific details.  I am a member of ancestry.co.uk, but that doesn't seem to help much.

Would you have any further information on a marriage between a William James Marshall (1926-2004) and a Margaret Murphy (1925-?)
Thanks

Thanks to you both for this information.  How was this information obtained?  Is there a web site with this level of information.  I have found a site called http://www.emeraldancestors.com . Do either of you know if this is any good?
Would you have any more information on my ancestors if I were to give you the names/dob's etc.?
This line is on my maternal grandmothers side, and I have not been able to get too far, being here in England.

Hertfordshire / Re: Therfield Information
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I've been away, not only in Hertfordshire, but Germany!

The therfield.net web site is very useful.  In fact, I arranged to meet the author in Therfield during my trip up there.

There is so much information on the site that it is essential to view if you have any interest at all in Therfield or the surrounding area.

There is also a nice public house in nearby Barkby (The Tally Ho) which sells an ale brewed near Therfield!
