Dear Alastair
I am sending this on behalf of a friend who does not have internet access.
In a post last year you asked for information on Gladys Ewart Rossouw ("Gladys") I have the following.
Gladys married Jan Hendrik Rossouw (note the correct spelling of Hendrik) in the early 1930's. He was born in Paarl and started his career as dentist at Winburg in the Orange Free State and later moved to Harrismith and then Durban. His last practice was in Paarl where he arrived in 1948 and where he died in 1952 after an operation.
As far as I could establish Gladys never practised as a dentist on her own, but assisted her husband in his practice from time to time. She adapted well in South Africa and was accepted by the broader Rossouw clan. She spoke little Afrikaans although it was the language used by the Rossouws and the Paarl community in general.
Jan Hendrik and Gladys had only one child, as far as we know, Ewart William. Ewart,in his later years, became an accomplished musician and played the violin in the Cape Town City Orchestra.
Gladys died in 1983, not 1987. (I am going to try and attach a photograph. Hope it works.Pietsmit)
Now a question from my side. In your post you say that Gladys was the daughter of Dr.William Munro but you also say that she was born Hopeman. Is there an explanation for the apparent contradiction?
Kind regards
Deon Rossouw.
PS Sorry I could not get the photo attached.Pietsmit
mod note Ewart died in 1981 so no longer living.
