Ayrshire / Re: Clerk or Clark - Looking for death date
« on: Friday 18 March 22 22:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Lorraine

I have just seen this thread.  Arthur Clark was 4xG-grandfather.  I am pretty sure he died some time between 1851 and 1854, in Girvan.  He has no death certificate in Scotland, and his wife described herself as a widow on the 1861 census, so that would be the logical conclusion.                              if you are interested in comparing notes.

Thanks

Monaghan / Re: McAree family from Monaghan

Glad to hear that's of help.  I don't recognise any of the names from your McArees, so I suspect it's a different branch to mine.

I got the information about the name from a poor law record, where my G-G-grandfather gave both names and told the inspector that his mother had told him that McAree was the Irish for King.  That particular branch of the family were not always on the right side of the law, and I have no doubt that having an easy alias to hand was sometimes quite convenient!

Best wishes

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: John O'kane & Susan Diamond

I am their G-G-G grandson, descended from their son John, who married Mary Ann Mitchell in Glasgow in 1869.  The other children of John Kane and Susan Diamond that I am aware of are:

- Margaret Kane (married William Mooney in 1865 in Kilrea)
- Isabella Kane (married James Lochery in 1884 in Glasgow)
- Joseph Kane (married Mary Curran in 1882 in Glasgow)
- Patrick Kane (married Martha Nugent in 1878 in Glasgow)

Thanks for the tip about Rob.  I'll have a look on that forum too.

Regards

Dominic

John Kane died in Drumagarner, near Kilrea, County Derry, in 1866.  If you look further up the chain, Rob seems to have found some more specific place names in Ireland which I didn't have.  I haven't heard back from Rob so I suspect he is not using this forum any more.

Susan Diamond also came from Ireland but she moved to Glasgow with her children and died there in 1889.

Yes, they are my GGG-grandparents.  If you're researching them too, please send me a personal message and we can exchange data.

Thanks

Monaghan / McAree family from Monaghan
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 20:01 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for links to a Matthew McAree, from the town of Monaghan, who was married to a Margaret Coyle.  They were probably married in the late 1830s (they had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in Monaghan in 1840) and emigrated to Glasgow some time in the late 1850s.  They also had the following children, all born in Ireland:

Elizabeth McAree:  born c. February 1840
John McAree:  born c.1842
William McAree:  born c.1844
Joseph McAree:  born c.1853

The family may also have used the surname King, which they said was the anglicized version of McAree.

Margaret Coyle was the daughter of John Coyle and Bridget Boylan.

Any information gratefully received.

Many thanks

Donegal / Blaney family
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find further information on a Michael Blaney, who was married to Sarah Green and/or Cecilia McGlashan in Donegal?  The place names I have found links to are "Carlin" (presumably Carlan) and "Rosmellin" (which may be a mis-transcribing of Rathmullan).

Michael had at least two sons, Denis (born c. 1839/1840) and Hugh (born c. 1840/1) and a daughter Mary (born c.1848/9).  The three children had all emigrated to Glasgow by about 1860.

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks

Rob

I am a descendant of John Kane and Susan Diamond.  You seem to know more about their Irish background than I do, but I know a fair amount about those of their children who made it to Scotland (including Joseph Kane and Mary Curran).  Get in touch if you want to compare notes.  I think there's a way of sending personal messages through this site but I haven't worked out how to do it yet!

Best wishes
