Completed Census Requests / Re: 1841 Sussex Census on CD
« on: Saturday 09 October 04 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi Pam

Unfortunately I do not have the 1851 census for Brighton, but there are a couple of people on here who do - so lets hope they read this message.

I do have the 1841 for Brighton, but there are some 340 pages to slowly scroll through - so its a long slow slog.

Looking in the 1851 census for Lewes we possibly have one from your list

GRAINGER William, Lodger, Unm, 13, General Labourer, born Lewes - living in Priory Street, Lewes with the Burfield Family.

Again, I have the 1841 census for Lewes, but its not indexed, so its again a long slow trawl through the returns.

Hi again Chris,

Sorry for any misunderstanding regarding the 1851 Brighton census, any help you can give is much appreciated.
The William Grainger you found is a possible for my 2xgreat grandfather, so annoying that he is a lodger rather than living with his family !!!
As I said previously, I don't want to put you any trouble and expect you to trawl through the entire censuses you have, any little bit of information would be wonderful.
Thank you for the prompt reply to my last message.
Happy hunting and many thanks........................Pam

Hi Pam4mat

OK - when you have got your head around your research again - give us a shout

Will be happy to help you

Hi Chris,

I would really appreciate any infofmation you may come across on the 1841 or 1851 census for the following people.
I have some of them appearing on BMD certificates I have, and have managed to piece together some details from IGI and occasional visits to Lewes and Brighton record offices, but have not yet had the time to locate them on censuses.
I don't expect you to scan every page looking for them but if any come your way I would love to have my rather sketchy research confirmed!

John Boon, b. c1833, occupation in 1855 Painter, father George Boon, occupation probably Butcher, mother probably Jane, all should be living in Brighton and from Sussex.

Harriett Traveller, b. c1833, father Thomas, occupation Servant, mother probably Martha, again all in Brighton and hailing from Sussex.

William Granger/Grainger b. c1835, probably Lewes, father Henry, occupation Labourer, mother unknown, all should be living in Brighton.

Harriett Packham/Peckham, b. c1828, probably Brighton, Father Thomas, b. c1790, occupation probably Labourer, Ostler or Groom, mother Mary/May, b. c1799, all should be living together in Brighton in 1841 but Thomas may have been living apart from his family by 1851.

Sorry it's a bit of a shopping list but until I can get hold of the '41 and '51 censuses myself, lovely people like you are my only hope in my search for my Sussex roots, living as I do so far from the dear old County!

Anything I can do for you in return, please let me know.

Thanks and best wishes.......................Pam

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Sussex Census York
« on: Friday 08 October 04 22:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi Pam4Mat

Thanks for the private message

Looked through the 1841 for Dallington with the extra information you gave me

HO107/ 1108/ Page 8 – ?, Dallington, Sussex
YORK William, 65, Bricklayer
             Elizabeth,
             John, 15

All born in County

There was only one Ann York in Dallington, but aged 45 and married with family - so more than likely it was not her.

Can I look anywhere else for you in the 41 or 51 census for Sussex

Chris in 1066Land

Hello again Chris,

My profuse apologies for only now replying to your last message..............family concerns have kept me away from the PC for a bit ( existant family as opposed to the dead lot for a change)

The James Phipps you found certainly sounds like my GG grandfather and the George is a new avenue for me to explore.

Regarding Ann York, her age was 22ish at the time of her marriage so cannot be the right one.
A pity as the given occupation of her father at the time of her marriage in 1841 was a Mason, not that far removed from a Bricklayer!
If you are still willing I would very much like to take you up on your offer of more help through the Sussex censuses you have and will be in touch soon.
Thank you for all your help to me so far.

All my best wishes ..................................Pam

Sue, Thanks for that information. I know that my John's father was also name John so the John and Ann are a possibility I will look into.
Does it give an occupation for John aged 41 on the census?
Many thanks................Pam

Sylvia,
Thanks for taking the trouble to look.

I am trying to trace the birth of my great grandfather John Boon. In the 1891 and 1901 census he gives his birthplace as London, no other information, and would have been born around 1860-1861. I know from his marriage certificate of 1886 that his father was also named John, was deceased and a coach painter by trade. The GRO has no record of his birth under the name John Boon with a father also named John so I really don't know how I am going to track him down.
I have been trying to find him for 9 months now so any information would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks....................Pam

Hello Sylviann,

I am looking for a Boon family in London, no other information as to district but the head of the house may be John Boon.
Sorry this is so vague but I am at my wits end looking for this family.
Many thanks...........................Pam

Hi Chris,

Thanks for looking for the Boons, my trip down south was no more fruitful either. I know there was a Boon family in 1871 in Brighton but 20 years is a long time.
I think I might have to start looking in London now.

Regards............Pam

Hello Chris, I have been looking for the birth record of John Boon for months now. All I know for certain is that he was born c1860 in either London or Brighton, he was a fruit hawker/greengrocer by trade, father was also named John, deceased by 1886 and a coach painter by trade , John junior married Eliza Granger in Brighton in 1886 and died aged 40 in 1902. From census results and certificates he seems to have lived in the Albion Street and Richmond Buildings area of Brighton most of his adult life. I am hoping to get to Lewes during my forthcoming visit to Sussex but have many other places to visit so I don't know how much I can fit in in the 3 full days I have before returning to Notts on Friday. My brother and sister-in-law have thrown a spanner in the works by producing their first child a month premature this morning, Alicia Abbott weighed three pounds fifteen ounces. She will be in hospital for a few days, so as present family must come before the past I must see her at East Surrey hospital on one of my days off.
Any help you are able to give me will be much appreciated.
Many thanks..................Pam
