Durham Completed Look up Requests / Re: William Clarke b Lumley abt1808
« on: Wednesday 24 February 16 08:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I did get a lot of help in 2005...
William Clark b 14 Oct 1809 Lumley c 10 Dec 1809 CLS
Married Margaret Oliver b 4 Jul 1811 Houghton c 26 Jul 1811 HLS, on 18 Feb 1832 in HLS

William was son of Richard Clark ( b 1772 Lumley or Pontop or Dipton, c 17 May 1772 Auckland St Andrew, buried (possibly ) Pittington 8 Nov 1846. Richard was married to Ann Iveson (b 1771 Coundon, c 17 Aug 1771 Auckland St Andrew (AA) buried 6 Oct 1830 Pittington).
Margaret was d/o Robert Oliver b abt 1784 Monk Hesledon, c 19 Jun 1818, d 1851-1861, and Alice Tewart b abt 1787 Dubmire, HLS, c 15 Jul 1787 HLS, died 1830 Collier Row, HLS, bur 10 Dec 1830 HLS. They were married 11 Apr 1808 HLS.  Robert later married Ann Wright 10 Aug 1835 in HLS.

Richard Clark was son of William Clark b (I think) 9 Jan 1726 Lumley, buried 20 Apr 1788 AA. He was a linen weaver in Bishop Auckland. Richard married Ann Iveson b 1771 Coundon, c 17 Aug 1771 AA, buried 6 Oct 1830 Pittington., married 20 Jun 1797 AA.

Ann was d/o Joseph Iveson (1731, c 15 Jan 1731 Cassop, bur 13 Mar 1790 Coundon) and Mary Rodam (possibly) b after 1735 c 18 Mar 1738 Stanhope died 1784 Coundon, bur 11 Apr 1784 AA, married 16 Dec 1765 AA.  Mary is possibly linked to Hilary Rodam Clinton, but no records to prove this!

William married a Mary....(and this is a bit of a guess!) Mary Slack b abt 1724 died 26 Feb 1811 AA, buried 28 Feb AA. They were married before 1753.   Evidence is based on first four childrens names ...Rachel, George, Joseph and Elizabeth, which match William being son of George Clark b 1689 in Lumley c 5 May 1689 CLS, married 18 Oct 1712 (CLS) to Elizabeth Robinson or Roginson b 1688 Lumley c 27 Dec 1688 CLS.   Mary was d/o Joseph Slack and Rachel Middleton, married 14 Dec 1725 Middleton in Teesdale.   Would need to go through the actual registers to check this out!

That's a potted summary; William Clark b 1726 had a large family....Rachel 1753, George 1755, Joseph 1757, Elizabeth 1760, Mary 1764, John 1767 and Richard 1772.  Son George carried on the linen weaving business and in 1841 his wife Ann (nee Longstaff) was listed in William Street Auckland, as 95 years old, Worsted Dealer, living with Rachel (now Brown, aged 60) who carried on the business (1851 census).  Headstone for Ann, Rachel and some children is still in the churchyard at Auckland St Andrew (South Church)

I think the link back to Lumley is telling...there were a lot of clarks there in 1580-1700, leasing land from lord Lumley, and then getting some more in Witton Gilbert.   Not possible to sort it out, though...to many with the same names!!!

Hi "Preshous"...
My link is with an Ann Langstaff/Lonstaff born around 1740-1750 who married George Clark in 1776 in AA.
My best bet is Anne c 21 Oct 1750 AA, d/o Thomas Longstaff (of Midridge( c 10 Jun 1711 AA, s/o John L 1680-1729 shoemaker) and Margaret watson) and Margaret Wellfoot.
Anne is on a headstone in AA (1846 said to be aged 101!).
There is another Anne (c 27 Nov 1751 d/o John - who could be John the joiner or john the butcher).
And another (c 21 Jan 1744 Cockfield, d/o Thomas and Mary [ Ling]).
ANy info you come across relating to those Annes would be very useful, if it helps eliminate some..
Thanks
Graham

HI
IGI says Prudence Train c 28 Sep 1788 Gateshead d/o Thomas Train (possibly Thomas c 1753,  s/o William, maybe married Mary Brown NCL All Saints in 1777)
Maybe William was her son 1807 (before marriage).   Then she married John Robinson in 1819.  Her age may not stack up against the 1841 census, but it does match the 1851 census which has her born 1791).
Note that another Prudence Train was b Jun 1809 Gateshead d/o Henry Train and Jane Kay .

Hi Linda - I just re-read your post - I got it wrong - There is a George Longstaff  c 16 Dec 1787 St Helen Auckland bur 14 Dec 1838.  He was a shoemaker.   Again I recommend the site mentioned for all the Longstaff pedigrees put together by Blundell.   South Church is St Andrew Auckland (just S of Bishop Auckland, and close to St Helen Auckland)

Durham / Richard Clark(e) in Houghton-le-Spring records
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 02:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone have access to birth/baptism records from Houghton-le-Spring?  I'm looking for Richard Clark(e), listed later as "of Lumley" .  He was married in 1797 in Auckland St Andrew, pointing to a birth date around 1765 to 1775.  He doesn't appear in the Chester-le-Street records (except for birth of some of his children). Since other children are recorded in Houghton-le-Spring (St Michaels), I suspect Richard's own birth record might be there.

Descriptions like "of lumley, pitman of washington" twice in birth records held in Cheste-le-Street for his children have made me think my earlier idea (b 1772 in Auckland St Andrew) is probably wrong.  Lumley - could also be Rainton area - borders with Houghton, and Richard's later children were baptised in Houghton, so......hence the interest in anyone with access to the Houghton records!

Graham

By the way - I've been helped so much  through this site!.  Particular thanks to Geoff!!!

Thanks for the suggestions: I guess I need to find the record of william's birth, which is hard from Australia.  Tried looking at the children'snames, but nothing definite there (william had 10, and that covers a bit of ground). A further complication is that when he married Margaret Oliver in 1832, there is no record of parents - best bet for her birth is 1815, but my guess is that when they married, she stated her age as 21 ie. born 1811 or earlier.

If anyone is able to help with a look-up of

(a)  birth record for william clark (1809, "lumley" from census, possibly christened chester-le-street 10 dec 1809), and
(b) william clarke and margaret oliver m 18 feb 1832 houghton-le-spring,

I would be very grateful.
Thanks
