Dumfriesshire / Aicherbeck listed on Birth registration Canonbie, Scotland
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 06:11 BST (UK)  »
I have just found the birth registration for my GGGrand Mother and it reads William and Betty Jardine(s) Aicherbeck?? had an illegitimate daughter on 15 January 1812 from the OPR Births 814/0020 0252 Canonbie.

I am really interested if Aicherbeck is a house name/village or what?  If I can source this information I may be able to track down her father's information.  I know that Jannet's daughter, Elizabeth married Andrew Jardine who was her third cousin. So this information would help on both sides of the tree.

Thanks Anne,

I also found Banns for I think James (funny writing JAS) Weaver at Brydekirk and Jane Jefray in the parish of Hoddam on 18 June 1829.

I have attached an image (I hope that is allowed) - I am not sure if this one is mine?  I am think it was Jeffrey because that is Andrews middle name - isn't that one of the naming conventions?

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Thanks - I found all the census stuff after they were married but there is some confusion apparently there are two James Jardines who married Jean/Jane/Janet Jeffrey/Jeffray.

I figure if Elizabeth Harkness and Andrew Jardine were 2nd or third cousins, as Ihave led to believe, if I get back in one line far enough I should be able to link the two "Jardine" sides of the family.

As we coming later in the year I would like to have as much research done so we can verify when we are there if possible.

Thanks
Kerry

I am trying to trace back from Andrew Jardine  (b 1836 in Annan) and his wife Elizabeth Harkness (b 1839 in Brydekirk) they were apparently 2nd or 3rd cousins.

Andrews father was James Jardine (no confirmed birth date and place but maybe st mungo) and Elizabeth's mother was Janet Jardine b January 1812 in Canonbie -daughter of William Jardine and Elizabeth (maybe illegitimate).

I would appreciate any assistance prior to coming to Scotland later in the year.

Thanks

Monica,

The one in 1880 was for breach of the peace - the others were mostly drunkenness and a  minor assaults early on.  Very interesting.  I wondered if alcoholism was genetic - my dad liked a tipple too much!

An update,

The wonderful people from National Archives in Scotland have been able to find Margaret Harkins prison record(s) - note the plural.  Interesting that they noted that her age varied greatly each time from 1873 to 1880 - In 1880 she was sentenced to 10 days during which time my Grandmother Margaret was born.

More digging to do now!

Hi Chezz,

I have the death registrations for Rose and William - I also have Margaret Harkins (McILhenny) birth 1880 and McGUire Harkin Marriage 1886 which I will send through to you on an email.

The first Margaret you mention was too old for my Grandmother and too young for GGm.

Now I just have to watch all the videos and work out how to access the poor relief records while in Australia.

Hi Chezz,

I am confused too - The birth registration has William McIlhenny listed as father but says "illegitimate" and he died 10 months before she was born ??? I am going to try and find some more information out through prison records because that is where she was born.  I know the address listed for John McGuire and Margaret McElhinney(Harkins) marriage (1886) was very close to the address for William and Margaret (in 1879) when William died.

I think Margaret McGuire(my gm) was either a sister or half sister to your Grandmother but yet to be proved.
