South Africa / Elisabeth KOSSATZ (Zimmermann?)
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 00:44 GMT (UK)  »
I’m looking for any information about Elisabeth KOSSATZ who arrived in Capetown South Africa (from Hamburg) 29 Feb 1860 as part of the KAINA family (as her mother had remarried). She was born 9 Feb 1845 in the staunchly Wendish village of Drehnow (near Peitz) and her parents were Johann and Anna (nee SCHLODDER) KOSSATZ.
I have found a Death Notice –
The death of Elizabeth Zimmerman (nee Kossatz) on 8 Nov 1891, born in Germany Feb 1845, wife of the late William Frederick Zimmermann (1841-1886).
- and suspect this might be ‘my’ Elisabeth, but have been unable to find a marriage record that might confirm this. I need to know if the Zimmermanns can be ruled out if perhaps they were already a married couple before emigrating to SA. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I've just been given a possible clue regarding my missing Elisabeth KOSSATZ...  It concerns the death in South Africa  of Elizabeth, wife of the late William Frederick ZIMMERMANN (nee KOSSATZ) 18 Nov 1891, born in Germany/Prussia Feb 1845. My Elisabeth may not have come to NZ at all, or came and returned shortly after! How can I go about finding if the Zimmermanns were already married when they emigrated to South Africa (thus proving this isn't my Elisabeth), or where and when they did marry (and see if the dates are a possible fit). As I mentioned earlier, the Departing Passenger List when the 'ALFRED' left SA for NZ did not include Elisabeth, but the Passenger Arrival List here DID! So there was always some doubt.
Any suggestions how to proceed would be welcome!

Hi all - I was beginning to think 'my' John Huet BATES must have been a BIGAMIST!
When Hannah died in NZ in 1894, her Death Cert (only recently discovered) stated her parents were 'John and Hannah (nee Hodge) BATES of London', and this tied in with the info kindly provided by you marvellous RootsChat detectives. Thank you one and all.

Dylan - sorry we don't seem to be related, and good luck to you in rewriting your family history.

Just as an aside, I found Hannah's gravesite (in a very sad state of disrepair) in the old Inangahua Junction cemetery in NZ's South Island where Hannah and her husband Henry LLOYD ran the Junction Hotel, and have had it restored to it's former glory. It is quite an ornate affair. So many of my ancestors lie in unmarked graves, and finding one actually marked but in such a parlous state I just couldn't leave it abandoned and uncaredfor.

Whilst searching for Hannah's arrival in New Zealand, I found reference to a 'Miss Bates, age 20, English, sailed to Hokitika NZ on the ship 'Alhambra' departing Melbourne Australia 27 March 1867.'
I'm betting this is her! There were a number of 'Misses in their 20s' on the ship (English, Scots and Irish) but I don't know if that has any relevance. But there are no clues how long she'd been in Australia or how/when she got there! She does seem to have been a very um... 'enterprising' lass!

Gosh Ray! Thanks so much! ...but I don't know how/where to find your trees. I'm not that all computer-savvy! Perhaps you could email them direct to me at (*) ? or even just the instructions for me to follow?
Best regards,
Lloyd
(According to my info, Frederick James was the only child born in South Africa - their second, Ellen Eliza, and the other six, were all born here.)

Thanks for that Raymond! Always nice to hear from another Gleeson!
My Thomas Gleeson died in Auckland NZ in 1869, and I'm getting nowhere with the sketchy (and possibly inaccurate info I have.) If he lied about his age to join the Army, who knows what else might be questionable! Even his wife Charlotte Morris, and her sister Caroline (and a possible brother) are complete mysteries. My current thoughts are the Morris children may have been  sent out to South Africa from an Orphanage or Workhouse  'for a better life' by 'The Childrens Friends Society'. Meanwhile, all I can do is try my luck with other branches of my tree.
All the best to you,
Lloyd G

Hi Graham - The good ship 'Gertrude' sailed from Gravesend 1 Nov 1862 with heaps of Robinsons on board. However, the only matches with ‘my’ Robinsons were Father William, Emma (26), and Matthew William (12). They arrived in Auckland NZ 9 Jan 1863.

It would have been William’s intention to get himself established and create a home for the family before sending for the rest of them.

So it came to pass that mother Eleanor, John William (19), Robert Henry (10), Eleanor 17), Dorothy Jane (15), and Hannah Maria (11), boarded the 'John Duncan' in Gravesend on 8 Oct 1863 and sailed to Auckland - arriving 23 Jan 1864. They settled in Takapuna.
In 1872 Hannah married Charles GLEESON and they moved to Huntly (establishing Gleesons Bakery). Hannah died in 1894 leaving Charles with 7 children - the youngest age 5. She is buried in Huntly Cemetery - the exact location unknown.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: John LLOYD - father of Richard James and Eliza
« on: Tuesday 20 August 13 02:54 BST (UK)  »
Given the fact that looking for a specific LLOYD connection in Glamorganshire with so little to go on is being somewhat ummm... over-optimistic, I tried Elizabeth's maiden name of MAY... and found...
Joseph MAY (Widower of Coety) m Catherine DAVY 12 Feb 1823 which seems a distinct possibility IF he had a daughter (Elizabeth) from his prev marriage b abt 1817.
Can anyone confirm/disprove this theory, as it might help narrow down my search for siblings Richard and Elizabeth LLOYD and their father John LLOYD?
(I do realise I'm clutching at straws...)
