Yorkshire (North Riding) / Guisborough Deaths 1891
« on: Saturday 25 February 06 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I have discovered that 2 children of my great grandparents died aged 1 and 4 in the June quarter of 1891 in the Guisborough civil registration district. Further investigation reveals that during that year there were approaching 300 deaths of children 0-5 years old in that district. I am awaiting copies of death certificates but in the meantime wondered if anyone has a view as to whether this was the norm or exceptional for that area in the 1890s or if there were any special circumstances leading to such a distressingly high infant mortality rate. As always any comments would be welcomed.
