Australia / Re: Lookup Richard Filgate South Australia
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi
The name caught my eye.  My ancestor also arrived on board the Brothers and had a Felgate couple as witnesses on her marriage in Melbourne.

Yes I realize that you have Filgate and I have written Felgate but I have found the names interchangeable.

James and Margaret Jamieson and their children disembarked along with my ancestor Frances Thurtle Jamieson.  Within 2 years they were all in Victoria.

I am wondering if your Richard had a brother John with a wife Margaret who settled in Bendigo?

Regards
Elizabeth

Hi,
I have a copy of the will of William Bartholomew, carpet/hearth rug manufacturer, Finsbury, who died in 1845.
I am happy to share.  My interest in a John Jamieson, carpet manufacturer.  William or his son William was a witness on a marriage for John's daughter in 1840.

Regards,
Elizabeth.

Citizen Howarth Cowdery died 25 Dec 1828
He married Martha RATHBONE  11 Sep 1816 Manchester Cathedral.

Martha dedicated a stained glass window in the Sandbach parish church to her siblings and husband.

" This window is dedicated to the memory of William Rathbone Esq, barrister at law of the Inner
Temple London, who died on the i'' May 1857 in the 72"'' year of his age; of Harriet Rathbone who
died on the 12"' July 1853 aged 65 years; of Joseph Rathbone who died on the 30*'' January 1810 aged
16 years, sons and daughters of the late John and Mary Rathbone of Sandbach : also of Citizen Howarth
Cowdroy Esq their son in law who died on the 25"' Dec. 1828 in the 34"' year of his age, by their much
loved and very loving sister and widow Martha Cowdroy.

Martha is living in Tranmere CHS in 1851 with her sister Harriet Rathbone and her son John Rathbone Cowdroy and daughter Emma.
In 1861 Martha is cited as being born in Scotland and is living in Oxton and Woodchurch.  Her occupation is described as "Gentlewoman in charge of house".
Her son John Rathbone Cowderoy was by this time married to Emma DARLINGTON and had several children.  John was curate of Oxton Parish in Cheshire in 1861.  One of his sons Ernest Darlington Cowdrey married Elizabeth JAMIESON in Nov 1877 in West Kensington.
By 1871 Rev. John R Cowderoy and family were living in Fulham London.

The JAMIESON connection is who I am interested in.  Elizabeth being the daughter of Alexander Jamieson, Contractor but mother unknown.

Hi Barb,

I actually have Colin and his family, Charles YOUNG and Vere CAMERON on the censuses up to 1881.
Charles remarried in 1858 and dies some time between 1871 and 1881 in Kilmallie, Argyll.

I am more interested in his descendants more than his ancestors.  He married Hannah HOSKIN in 1862 in Tenterfield.  Hannah is an older sister to my ancestor Richard Hoskin Jnr.

This couple is the last one that I have to find info on in this line which I have back into the 1700's.
Actually Hannah's mother was Hannah HAWKEY and her father and siblings all emigrated to Cobourg ON
in the 1840's.  Also Nicholas HOSKIN, Richard's brother.  Nicholas died in Cobourg and his wife remarried and moved into Michigan.

Thanks for the offer.

Hi Barb,

Can you tell me where you found him in Canada or what led you there.  I did see his death in SA under Youngs.  Seems like you have found out quite a bit about his parents and family - just wondering if someone had made contact with you.

Found a reference to a E. Young leaving Melbourne for Adelaide in June 1854 on board the Yarmouth
aged 19yrs.  Considering Emery was 21 when he married in 1856 then this could be him.
Film month June page 2.

Another entry for E Young on board the Havilah II in May 1854 but he is aged 24yrs.
Film month May page 2.

My Colin left Melbourne for Sydney in June 1852.
Could not find Emery on board the Blonde in 1848 which is what I believe Colin arrived.

Hello,

I came across your entry for Emery YOUNG and was taken by the names Charles YOUNG and Vere CAMERON.

Have you managed to confirm if this is your family?

I believe your Emery may be born to this couple and perhaps a brother to Colin who I am researching.
When Colin got married his mother's name was cited as Emily and if you say Evere/Vere quickly you can sound like Emery.  Add a thick Scottish accent and it is possible.
What gave me the clue was Colin named his eldest daughter Evere Hannah Young.

Would love to exchange notes.

Hi Therese,

I am hoping we may have a connection.  I have a Mary CUDDIHY who was a convict into Tassie in 1847 who cites her father as Michael Makill Cuddihy in her marriage in 1854.  I believe this should be McGillicuddy.  Her mother being Bridget IVERS.

Bridget Cuddihy and her three daughters were sentenced to 7yrs for sheep stealing in 1847 in Co Clare.
Bridget was a native of Limerick and the girls were born in Clare between 1828 and 1833.  Her record states that she was a widow of some 11 yrs.
Also that she had 5 children, 1 son in the 67th and 3 girls on board.  I take the 67th to be the Army.

I notice that your man had named his first son Michael.  Any chance your Dennis might be the lost brother of my three girls?

Cheers
