One of the family lines I am researching (Trethowan) were shipwrights in Cawsand & Kingsand. This was a smuggling area. I have been told that shipwrights were very well placed to construct hidden compartments on boats they were working on. It was then a not unusual next step to invest their money in buying property on land.
