Armed Forces / Re: Scottish foot soldier at Lewes, Sussex 1738

I have been told that regiments were moved away from their home areas to other parts of the country so that, in the event of public disorder, they would not be ordered to fire on their own kin.

When my grandfather joined the British Army in 1914, he was an older ex- Regular soldier and he was given a GSSR regimental number.

GSSR = General Service Special Reserve, so I wonder if your man is similarly Special Reserve
(Regular?).

Do you know his age, and if he had prior service in the RN or British Army?

The Common Room / How to edit Tags in Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 30 August 23 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I have written tags for several people in my family tree.

Now find that I would like to make some edits; however, cannot find the appropriate "EDIT" command, and cannot just overwrite the edit.
What am I missing?

ShaunJ,

You replied almost before I had posted—-many thanks!

Since “Jones” is the quintessential Welsh surname, would you care to repeat the exercise?

My last request for now—-honest!

If I had a sub. to any of the services I would do it for myself.

The Common Room / Percentage of “Smith” surname in 1911
« on: Monday 14 August 23 15:35 BST (UK)  »
We know that “Smith” is the most common surname in England.

For a specific research purpose, I am trying to determine just what % of the population it was in the 1911 Census of Eng. & Wales,

a) in England alone,

b) in Wales alone,

c) in England & Wales together.

Are these data published somewhere that I have yet to locate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

JMB

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Inheritance of DNA
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 19:01 BST (UK)  »
We know that we inherit our DNA from our parents.

It’s almost automatic to think 50% mother & 50% father.

However, it is known that it is never exactly 50:50.

Has it ever been determined what the extreme values are? 60/40, 70/30/, 80/20, 95/5?

Or even an average value, if such a thing exists?

RJ137 and loord74,

Those colorized photos are absolutely superb!!

Could you tell me the software packages you both used to get those results.

Also, does it take practice to get good results?

JMB
