One Name Studies / Re: Link: One PLACE studies
« on: Tuesday 31 December 13 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
Having followed the link, I still don't know just WHAT is needed to be done for a One Place Study.
All I know is that that site costs £10 a year.

Is there anyone who can give advice on how to do a One Place Study please?

Kent / Goodnestone vs Goodnestone
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 04:42 GMT (UK)  »
How can I tell the difference between Goodnestone (the one near Graveney & Faversham) and Goodnestone (the one near Chillenden & Aylesham).
Is there something obvious I should look for in Census and parish records that can help?

Hi

In the 1851 census William Baldock born c1800 puts GRAVENEY as his place of birth. Graveney, Luddenham and Oare are pretty much in the same area, only 5-6 miles between them.

claire

Oh good, thanks - I haven't yet got his 1851 - but handy to know about the closeness of those locations

A little extra info, in case it's useful :)
Under Notes for Eliza's baptism it says Shopkeeper.
(That is the only Bowles baptism in Hernhill)

oh good - I know that Edward was later the "Licensed Victualler of Faversham's Waterman's Arms", so shopkeeper to Victualler to Licensed Victualler are good steps in the right direction and all in the same line of work.
Thanks :)

Childrens christenings of WILLIAM and JANE that I can find

Anne chr. 20 June 1802 Graveney.
Maria   "   21 October 1810 Graveney.
Jane    "   11 September 1796 Graveney.
Thomas " 16 March 1794   Oare. (surname transcribed BALDUCK)

Found another William Baldock chr. GRAVENEY 21 October 1798, parents: William and Mary.

claire

Oh good one! A baptism for Ann/Anne too!
Definitely need to look at Graveney records in more detail then.
I was thinking it was too far away, but even at 25miles, it's only a day's walk (9-10hours)
That's almost nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Thank you!

The William Baldock born c1800 Gravesend ~ there are four possibilities that I can find
1) William chr. 24 August 1798 GRAVESEND. Parents: John and Sarah
2)     "       "   17 February 1799      "                 "    : Richard and Elizabeth (think this one must have died)
3)     "       "   19 July 1809 Gravesend, Parents: Richard and Elizabeth.
This one is the most likely going on family names in census
William Edward Baldock chr. 3 January 1802 Gravesend. Parents: Edward and Sarah.

Thanks - will have to look for those and see if I can get any further.

There is a christening of an Eliza Bowles
Eliza chr. 13 November 1825 Hernhill, Kent. Parents: Edward and Ann Bowles
Ahh - I thought I was missing a child of that marriage - I'm sure that's the Edward Bowles-Ann Baldock marriage.

And a James Baldock
James chr. 4 July 1813 Graveney, Kent. Parents: WILLIAM and JANE Baldock.
If that's the same set of parents, then I think there's also a Maria and a Jane born in Graveney.
I wonder if there are other kids born in between the two places

Thanks Claire :)

Kent / BALDOCK & COOPER marriage - looking for issue
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 06:49 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if some kind soul can help me please.
I'm trying to find more children of William BALDOCK & Jane COOPER - or at least help confirm or deny the parents of a suspected child.

William & Jane married on 12 October 1793 in Luddenham, Kent.
Witnesses were James COOPER and ?William ?GLASCOCK
I think James Cooper and Jane Cooper were siblings, but I am yet to confirm that, but Jane's parents were William & Mary.
I do not know yet who William BALDOCK's parents were.

Known and reasonably confirmed children are Thomas born c1794 in Oare, and Ann born c1802 in Faversham. Ann BALDOCK married Edward BOWLES in 1824 in Preston, Thomas BALDOCK apparently never married.

William & Jane BALDOCK are recorded in the 1841 census as living in Ham, Preston, Kent.
William is aged 69 putting his year of birth at c1772 and he is recorded as being a Farmer
Jane is aged 65 putting her year of birth at c1776, however I think I have found her baptism in Boughton Under Blean in October of 1774.
With them is listed Thomas Baldock aged 45 and a 15 year old Eliza BOWLES whom I believe is a relative (but exactly how is yet to be worked out.)
Nearby on the same census page, is another William Baldock, aged 15, and in another house also on the same page is a James Baldock aged 25 with his wife Sarah and 3 young children.
The 15 year old William Baldock I think is more likely to be a grandchild than a child of William & Jane, however the 25yr old James is just old enough to be considered as a possible child of my William & Jane. I have not been able to locate a logical baptism for either the 15 yr old William or the 25yr old James (recalling the rounding down of ages in 1841 census)
I can not see any other Baldock surnames within the same enumerators book.

William BALDOCK, born c1772, dies sometime between 1841 and 1851, as on the 1851 census Jane BALDOCK nee COOPER is now listed as a widow, aged 77 (confirming 1774 as probable birth year), and she and son Thomas (aged 57) are still at Ham, Preston and are farming 40 acres with the help of two servants.

Now for the suspected child
I have another William BALDOCK, born in Gravesend, Kent c1800 and who married a Susan BOWLES in 1824 in Preston, and who are in Goodnestone in 1841 and 1851, and in Sheldwich in 1861.
Susan Bowles and Edward Bowles (who married Ann Baldock) are siblings, and I strongly suspect that the younger William Baldock and Ann Baldock are also siblings, but I can't find the younger William Baldock's baptism to confirm his parents as being William Baldock and Jane Cooper.

Attached is a small section of the tree, showing the links between the main BALDOCK and BOWLES players in the hope that it helps the above make more sense.

Now, after I've thoroughly confused you all, is anyone familiar with this family, or is anyone able to help me locate the parents of William BALDOCK the younger, and/or more children of the elder William BALDOCK and Jane COOPER?

Many many thanks.

Thank you for those contact details JohninSussex and my apologies to Liz_in_Sussex, it appears that my father's memory was not quite accurate as I have received a very prompt reply from one of the staff at Woodvale.

Section 12, grave 61 is the correct location.

Not too far out, but far enough for problems to occur.
From the cemetery map I was sent, I believe they are in the red box area.

Thank you both for your help.
