The Common Room / Re: Help needed

Hi Girl Guide.

I saw the James who was a witness at the wedding, and the birth in Hovingham, and also wondered if the father James could also be the witness. I've been unable to find a James Calvert born within a few years of George, so I'm of the opinion that the witness was probably his father.

Unfortunately I cannot find any record of a George Calvert being born or baptised anywhere in the North East, except for one in Barnard Castle, but I'm pretty sure that I've found his marriage in 1836, so have discounted him.

I'm also looking at a George born in 1812 in Keyingham, Yorkshire, to James and Ann, but again I'm having difficulty tracking him after his birth, . Oh the joys of genealogy!

I guess I shall just have to keep looking, but many thanks for your advice and help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello all.

I'm just wondering if anyone can identify the uniform and the era of one of my distant ancestors, in the attached photograph.

Thanks in advance.

Hello again.

Regarding the witnesses at the wedding of George Calvert and Elizabath Williams, I cannot state with any degree of certainty that the witnesses are brother or sister. They may well be other relatives, but their names are the only information I have on them. So it's an assumption as to their relationship with the bride and groom, and yes, I know assuming is not a good idea in genealogy, but until I can find out more about George Calvert and his family it's about all I can do.

Many thanks for your reply.

Hi all.

Regarding the marriage of George Calvert. The witnesses were James Calvert (brother?) and Mary Williams (sister of bride?).

The Elizabeth Williams is the same one who later married Thomas Snowball on 21st Feb 1843 after the death of George in the colliery explosion in 1839.

Many thanks for your interest.

Hello all.

Any help offered for the following would be most gratefully received:-

George Calvert born @ 1811,. Place?

He was married to Elizabeth Williams in south shields on 11th Feb 1837, and was unfortunately killed in a mining disaster in 1839, at the St Hilda colliery, south shields.

He had a son George born 1838 and a daughter born after his death in july-sept 1839.

However I am unable to trace his birth, or father and mother.

 Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Jeff.

Hi all.

After much more research I have discovered that Emmanuel 's full name was Emmanuel George Jefferis. This is obvioisly where the George Jefferis on Mary ann's marriage certificate comes from.

I was aware of the other "adoption" of the male child Carlyle Brockbank, which indicates that the Jefferis family adopted at least two children. Unfortunately I am still unable to laocate Mary ann's biological parents, who are recorded on her birth certificate. I cannot find any recorded marriage before her birth or any possible deaths between her birth in 1875 and the 1881 census when she is recorded as a five year old boarder with the Jefferis family.

Oh the joys of genealogy!!!

Thanks to all for your help.
