Hi Jebber
Why is it you think that if he died in service the record will have been destroyed.

Armed Forces / 10th Foot - In India
« on: Tuesday 09 July 24 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have a 2nd Gt Grandfather, Robert Gillingham (Colour Sergeant, 2nd btn 10th Foot S/No 1740) who was serving in Burmah in 1871. I have a record of his marriage, and records of four of his children born in India.
I have record for 1861 (Corporal in England 1st Btn 10th Foot S/No 274).
His family returned to the UK (a daughter was born at sea 1874) but no record of him returning exists.
How can I find out if he died in service in India.
Any help appreciated
Ian

Not sure where the errors lies but the attached birth record clearly gives the "Signature of Registrar" as S. H. Parkin.

During the journey to Singapore, her last voyage in 1874, the HMS Victor Emmanuel's captain was S H Parkin and the surgeon was W D Alexander MD. This information is from a birth record of my Gt Gt Aunt. Hope it may be of use to you Roots Chat community.
From Singapore HMS Victor Emmanuel went to Hong Kong were she was to be a hospital ship stationed there.

Other Countries / Victoria Gillingham baptism

Victoria was born at sea on the HMS Victor Emmanuel on 5th October 1874. The ship was en route to Singapore. Her birth record states 'Not added as yet' for Baptismal name. She was presumably Baptised at sea before arrival in Singapore or after arrival. Where might I look for a record of the Baptism.

Hi Thanks for the reply. I have a record of the 1740 in Rangoon WO 12/2832. Did they get new numbers when pomoted ie 274 could become 1740. Also have Alfred in Miltary Asylum. It is the Period between Oct 1874 when wife was in transit to Syngapore and 1879 thyat we can fine no records of either the Mother or Father dying.
Need a trip to Kew I think

I have a Gt Gt Grandfather who in 1868 was a Colour Sergeant in the 2/10 Reg of Foot. How long would he have taken to rise to this rank. How important was this rank.
I have details of his Marriage to Catherine Keoling in Trimulgherry India 1867 and birth of three children Alfred H 1868 in Trimulgherry, Maud M 1872 in Bangalore and Victoria E 1874 Born at sea whilst regiment moving to Singapore. Any one know where to find records of regiment in singapore. Or records of their movements 1/10 and 2/10
TIA

Armed Forces / Birth at sea on HMS Victor Emmanuel
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 21:30 BST (UK)  »
On the 5th October 1874 Catherine Gillingham gave birth to a daughter. Her husband was Robert Gillingham a Colour Sergeant in the 1/10 Regiment. Other than the daughter’s birth and that the mother was aboard I cannot find any passenger list to check if other family members were on board. The family had 1 son (my gt grandfather) and 3 other daughters.
Can anyone suggest a resource I could search as all the online sources draw a blank.
