London and Middlesex / Re: Lookups for Samuel Gascoyne
« on: Monday 29 May 23 17:35 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks to all who replied to my query abt. Samuel Gascoyne. rosie99,johnhood,carolw,& lizzieL.
Generally it all confirms my thoughts that he lived & died in London in the later part of his life. His actual birth date was: 22 Apr 1858 & baptism 3 June 1858. This comes from my photo copy of the church  record, St Mary & All Saints, Chesterfield. The date 8 Mar 1859 is probably the date when his parents registered his birth @ the Chesterfield Register Office. He probably did not know his true DOB to give to the 1939 census enumerator.
Not sure rosie99 exactly what you are telling me abt. Free access sites etc. I think perhaps you mean the local library?? I do understand the restrictions we all have on this site abt. passing copyright document info. Currently my FindMyPast subscription has ended. Sorry for the delay in replying but my internet was down today.
Thank you all, Adjer.

London and Middlesex / Lookups for Samuel Gascoyne
« on: Sunday 28 May 23 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Gascoyne has been a bit tricky to research. In his census returns the Gascoyne spelling varies & his christian name has been Godfrey or Godfrey M S Gascoygne. He was born Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1858, parents Samuel & Dorothy. He married in South Normanton in 1889 to a widow Elvina Shirley. They moved to London Greenwich abt.1891 & later Lewisham where  his wife died in 1916. He may have died in 1944 Wandsworth, London. To confirm this 1921 & 1939 census' searches would help to find what happened to him. Thanks for any help on this. Adjer

Thanks to amondg &  QueenoftheWest for finding the death of Ann Hick 1876 Pontefract. I am confident that this is correct.
I searched using FamilySearch but could not find it. I entered "Yorkshire West Riding" in their search engine. I now find it does find it if I enter just "Yorkshire".  Thanks, Adjer.

Thanks very much Queenie for your valuable help. I now have her 1st name & early history. I did have
her Dudley marriage in my research file but mentally rejected it as wrong. Unfortunately I still cannot find the date & place of her death. Adjer.

Lavinia Hicks born: 21 May 1873, Great Preston, near Allerton Bywater. Trying to find the Christian name of her mother. Mothers Surname was Roberts. Father was John Hicks, 1835-1905, a widower in 1881. I think I need a look-up for the burial of her mother which may be in the church records of  St, Mary the Less, Allerton Bywater. If this fails, then churches in Castleford or Pontefract. The burial date should be between 1873 & 1881 & her age at death, late 30's to late 40's. Have not found any marriage record & she is not in census' 1861 or 1871. Thank you, Adjer.

garstonite; Thanks for trying.  I think the marriage info at Dilwyn, John Hicks is reliable, as I have another contact who has it on their tree, but no one can tell me where they got it. Mostly I do not put info on my tree until I have a copy from a reliable source. So I have a problem. Which John Hicks is the father of Richard Hicks b. 1812.  1. Dilwyn? or 2. Aston?  Adjer.
