Leicestershire / Re: Dobson/Whitworth in Shepshed

Hi Diddy,

I have all sorts of She(e)pshed links in my family. The male lines married (going from as far back as I can find) into Hadden, Lakin, Smith (who doesn't have some of those), Wardle, Hall, and Simpson in my direct line. If you happen to have any of those knocking around in your files, I'd be interested to hear about them.

Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular since I've been reading a lot of the archived newspaper articles, so you never know when I might come across a name.

Thanks,
Nigel

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll read through the information and go from there.

I can do a 1911 lookup myself, it's just a matter of making sure I have the right Parkers.

Thanks,
Nigel

Today it has population of 1100 and is about 13 miles up the A1 from Grantham, not exactly commuting distance in those days lol. I'm pretty sure it's the same person but I'm not sure why the name change. I've not looked for them in the 1901 census yet which I'll do when I get by from an evening beer :)

This is something I considered but dismissing as unlikely in the absence of any sort of marriage record I can find to tie the two together separately.

US Resources & Offers / Texas help and mail forwarding
« on: Wednesday 28 May 14 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm originally from England, now living in Dallas, Texas. I understand the frustration of trying to find some information that's within your grasp, but 4500 miles away.

As time allows, I'd be happy to understand research in the Texas area including visits and pictures if within the Dallas area.

Also, I know it can be hard to get items mailed out of the country due to the extra postage required. I'd be happy to receive and forward mail for just the cost of the postage (I'm not looking to make a profit), why pay $3 for extra postage to the US when it only costs $1 for a stamp!

Let me know how I can help you in your research.

Lincolnshire / This Parker family is driving me crazy!

Hi all,

This family might be playing a joke on us way ahead of its time.
Here we have John Parker and I'm looking for Annie Elizabeth who I eventually found as Ann E in the 1881 Census
Code: [Select]
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital condition Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
JOHN PARKER HEAD MARRIED Male 40 1841 LABOURER GRANTHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE
MARY PARKER WIFE MARRIED Female 34 1847 - CLAYPOLE, LINCOLNSHIRE
JOHN R PARKER SON SINGLE Male 8 1873 SCHOLAR SPITTLEGATE, LINCOLNSHIRE
LOUSIE PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 6 1875 SCHOLAR SPITTLEGATE, LINCOLNSHIRE
ANN E PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 0 1881 - GRANTHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE
BERNARD SHEERAN LODGER SINGLE Male 40 1841 - MITTINGAR, IRELAND

So, skip ahead 10 years later to see if the family are still there or have any more children...

Code: [Select]
First name(s) Last name Relationship to head Marital condition Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
JOHN PARKER HEAD MARRIED Male 50 1841 GENERAL LABOURER LINCOLNSHIRE
JANE PARKER WIFE MARRIED Female 43 1848 - LINCOLNSHIRE CLAYPOLE
JOHN ROBT PARKER SON SINGLE Male 19 1872 GENERAL LABOURER LINCOLNSHIRE, GRANTHAM SPITTLEGATE
LOUISA PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 16 1875 CIGAR MAKER LINCOLNSHIRE, GRANTHAM SPITTLEGATE
ANNIE ELIZABETH PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 10 1881 SCHOLAR LINCOLNSHIRE
IDA ALICE PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 7 1884 SCHOLAR LINCOLNSHIRE
FLORENCE ROSE PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 2 1889 - LINCOLNSHIRE

So, let's joke about "mary jane" :) With that out the way, the wife's year is one year out, which is fine, we can account for that with the census date difference.

There's no doubt these are the same family, but is the mother/wife really different?

Of course, I cannot find a birth for a "Many Jane" anything around those dates. I'm not even sure how I'm going to figure this out.

Oh yes, according to the census they are at the same address at 16 Hands Yard. To complicate things a little, there's another Parker family that moved in to 11 Hands Yard between 1881 and 1891. I can't read the husband's name, but the wife's name...Jane!

I'd be happy to send census records to anyone who would be interested in looking into this and offering some insight.

Thanks,
Nigel

Unfortunately I now live in the US so it's difficult to get local access. The good news is the Mormon church has done a lot of gathering and made their records available throughout the world via their Family History Centers. They have been my main source of information.

Recently I've subscribed to a newpaper site which has provided a lot of good historical and anecdotal information. Way back when, I had a Whitworth-Larkin marriage, then 100 years later there's a news report about a Whitwork, Larkin, and another name I recognise getting in trouble for something or other.

I'm not sure if you wish to swap GEDCOMs if you have one? My software does honour "living" and either you or I can remove any media that you wouldn't want available. I think it's valuable to merge our research so that more people have a better chance of linking together.

Thanks,
Nigel

I'm not really advocating one way or the other. It depends how much you value your images and how far you want to go to protect them. Since a lot of webhosts are based in the US, you can always apply for removal using the DCMA.

Of course, it's hard to beat a professional photo thief, but I expect most people who grab pictures just want to use them by simply copying them.

Leicestershire / Re: Deciphering a Newbould family occupation-is it a local firm?
« on: Wednesday 28 May 14 03:59 BST (UK)  »
You said it's not the Newbould you were looking for, who are you looking for? I don't see anyone with the name spelled as you do, but I see Newbold.

The William Newbold you're looking at on page 30 is definitely F W K. Same for his son John and other people on that page.

Maybe you can let us know who you're looking for then we can keep an eye out.

Not sure if this will hurt of hinder you.
Leicester Chronicle 19 March 1881 - Wddings
Newbold - Bennett - On the 15th nst, at St Winifred's Chapel, Sheepshed, Mr William Newbold to Miss Mary Bennett.

Just saw it in passing so thought I'd post it.
