I've just seen you've mentioned finding a William McNoe enlisting in the US Army in 1844. Yes, it's one of our McNoes! William enlisted in Kentucky for five years but deserted in 1846. His brother Irving McNoe (born 1827 Dumfries) also enlisted in the US Army on 9th February 1852 in Kentucky but was discharged on 29th March.

Their parents were John McNoe (born 1792 in New Abbey) and Agnes Smith (born 1801 in Dumfries-shire). This John's parents were Irving McNoe (my 5x great-grandfather) and Jean Graham.

It all takes a bit of working out!

Thanks

Hi there

I'm new to Rootschat and I've just come across this thread with the very unusual surname of McNoe. I think we are related. The grandparents of Janet Turner- William McNoe and Janet in Gasstown- this William was born in New Abbey in 1792 on 6th March. His parents were a William McNoe (born 1758 New Abbey. Occupation- Weaver) and Janet Maxwell. We're related through this William's brother, Irving McNoe (born 1761 New Abbey) who is my 5xgreat grandfather.

Now, I have done a bit of searching of the McNoes in New Abbey and beyond, simply because it's such an unusual surname and there aren't many of them about. William McNoe, born 1792, intrigued me so I looked into him. In the Old Parish Records on Scotlands People, there is a marriage for William McNoe soldier in the 26th Regiment of Foot, Edinburgh and Janet Shand, 5th June 1815.

So William's career as a soldier explains the different birthplaces of his children. William, born in New Abbey, was discharged from the army in 1829 aged 39. His discharge papers also confirmed he served in 26th Foot Regiment and had served from 1807 to 1829. William and family returned to Dumfries and he continued his job as a tailor (just like my Irving McNoe). Hope this is useful.

Thanks

Armed Forces / John Hunter- 21st Regiment of Foot from 1799-1822
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for any ideas how to find further information about my 4xgreat grandfather, John Hunter. I have the following-

His christening record from the Old Parish Records in Scotlands People
The regiment he served in from his daughter Helen Hunter's death notice in the Glasgow Herald in 1896 (this was subsequently confirmed by other records)
A transcript of the British Army Regimental Index 1806 on Find my Past
His Army Discharge papers from the National Archives- this says he was eligible for a pension

His Army Discharge papers state he served in Italy, Sicily, Egypt, America and France. His daughter Helen's death registration states her parents were John Hunter- Foot Soldier, and Margaret McQueen. Margaret Hunter (maiden name McQueen) appears on the 1841 census with her daughter Helen and states she is a widow. On various Scottish censuses, Helen states she was born about 1813 'At sea, off the coast of Spain', 'British Subject- Off the coast of Menorca'. This fits with the 21st sailing from Sicily to America.

So, the big question is, how can I find out where John Hunter was married, if he had any children while serving in the army and where he died after being discharged from the army? OK, that's really three questions :)

I also found a book in the National Library of Scotland written by a Sergeant David Brown from Ayrshire who also served in the same regiment in the same places as John Hunter. He paints a very good picture and writes very well of his experiences so at least I have some idea of the conditions my John Hunter served in. Finding someone else's memoirs helped me so it's good advice for others looking for more information. I discovered it's highly likely my John Hunter marched on Washington and helped burn down the White House in the War of 1812. If nothing else, this family history is certainly doing wonders for improving my knowledge!

Many thanks

Joycie

Hi Berlin-Bob, when I click the Add Record button it then says members contact each other using Personal Messages. This will now be my 4th or 5th post so I should be able to PM. Any ideas about what's happening or what I could do? Advice much appreciated, Joycie

I'm a new Roots-chatter- just joined last weekend. I'd love to add quite a few individuals to the traveller database (Townsleys, Kennedys, Campbells all in Scotland/Ireland) but when I click the Add Record option it doesn't open up a data sheet as per the instruction screenshot on how to add a record. I've posted three times so I should be allowed to use PM now. Or is there a different procedure? Forgive a newbie asking lots of questions :)
Thanks

Wigtownshire / Re: Jane Townsley in Wigtownshire (born Ireland)

Hi Rosie17, thanks for your quick reply. The death registration doesn't say anything about her being married before. The man she married in Leswalt, Scotland in 1849 (William Mills) left her/ran away/disappeared in the late 1860's but that's another story! The Old Parish Record of Jane's marriage to William Mills is very factual and brief and again, doesn't mention anything about her being married before. This traveller family are certainly very elusive!

Travelling People / Re: Gypsy, Traveller, Circus, Fairground etc. website links

I came across this website http://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/en/ subtitled 'Kist o' riches' and found it fascinating. It is free to access and is a joint venture by the University of Edinburgh, BBC Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland. There are over 34,000 oral recordings (stories, recollections and songs) made since the 1930's up until the 1970's, and a lot of them are of traveller people. It is searchable by surname if you are looking for a particular traveller family name (I'm interested in Townsley).

Have a browse and I hope you find something interesting on it, I did.

Wigtownshire / Jane Townsley in Wigtownshire (born Ireland)
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 17:33 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a piece of information about my 3xgreat-grandmother, Jane Townsley. She appears in the 1841 census in Broompark, Old Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland-
John Townsley, 47 born Ireland, Metal Caster
Rachel Townsley, 46 born Ireland
Jane Townsley, 28 born Ireland
Elizabeth Townsley, 26 born Ireland
John Townsley, 22 born Ireland, Blacksmith
Ann Townsley, 20 born Ireland
Charles Townsley, 18, born Ireland, Apprentice Blacksmith
Rachael Townsley, 15, born Ireland
Agnes Townsley, 11, born Ireland
Helen Townsley, 8 born Ireland
Easter Townsley, 5 born Ireland
William Campbell, 29, born Ireland, Tinsmith
John Campbell, 23, born Ireland, Tinsmith
Stewart Campbell, 6, born Wigtownshire, Scotland
Rachel Townsley, 5 born Wigtownshire, Scotland

So, a strong Irish connection, then :) I also know that they were a traveller family and I have come across them travelling around the south of Scotland, specifically in Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Ayrshire and Argyle.

Jane married a William Mills (born about 1829 in Ireland- Tinsmith) in Leswalt, Wigtownshire, Scotland on 13th September 1849. She was about 36, he was about 20. Yes, an age difference, but this continues throughout the following censuses. Now, the specific piece of information I'd like to find out. Was Jane Townsley married before? On Ancestry in the Irish Records Extraction Database I found a marriage between a Jane Townsley and Stewart Campbell on 4th July 1833 at Kilrea, Co. Londonderry. Is there any way of finding out if this is the same Jane Townsley?

Any advice much appreciated!
