Alan Boyd, One son John Vine Chatterton emigrated to New Zealand in 1872 after getting married in London in 1871 after he had visited his relations & friends in Spalding, he returned to the UK in 1924 to visit and went to see his old home on May 20th with his brother, he introduced himself to the owners and was allowed to go all over it. He had 6 sons & a daughter, he died in 1926 age 79 in New Zealand.

Someone recently on another forum mentioned Michael & Louisa Chatterton in 1881 with 4 children and 13 family members, Louisa was the younger sister of my Gt Gt Grandad and I would like to know who the other people at the Ships Tavern were on that census day.

Thanks that answers my question, the book is all pieces from the Spalding newspapers in 1860's 70's and great interest to People of Spalding, He wrote his name inside the cover of his book his name, Maplehurst, Pembury, Kent. 5 Ap 40 and a photo of him and the house where he was born, now a Halifax Bank but about to close, he had retied to Pembury the year I was born 1939

I have a personally bound book that was owned by Mr F Ridlington titled Spalding in the 60's & 70's (that is 1860-1870) who retired to live in Pembury, Tunbridge Wells, Kent where my grandson & his wife & son live. They would be interest to know if he was still there when he died and was he buried there.

Thanks alexreg, very interesting reply thank you, I will look for that book, & thanks to everone for replies, the one who was lost in the storm of 1880 was a crewman on my Gt Grandfathers ketch Breeze, when he went overboard in a colision with a Brig in the Humber mouth his dog seeing him in the water jumped in after him and they both drowned.
