Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Boggs from Londonderry
« on: Monday 28 November 22 00:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have a passing interest in the Boggs family from Londonderry from my Quaker research. I think it's called 'urban myth' but the story goes like this. A family of Livingstone's from Scotland settled on some land just Southeast of Derry City in the 1700s. There was some sort of persecution relating to their Scottish homelands and they changed their names to 'Boggs' How true this is, I don't know-but DNA carriers of the name could test it.

Further add. See Birth of John Smith to older John Smith in 1838. The child's Mother was Elizabeth Kimmons of tully Townland. Joseph and Hannah were my Grandparents, his Father was the John born 1838 and his parents were John Smith and Elizabeth Kimmons.

I am the 3x Granddaughter of Elizabeth Kimmons from Tully Rd, Limavady. She married John Smyth in 1837.(John was Presbyterian) I am also a DNA match to Liam of Derry who has contributed to this post. My match to Liam is on both paternal and maternal sides as Margaret Holmes was my Great Grandmother's sister. Margaret Holmes, the sister, married Joe MisKimmons. They were Catholics living around Josephine Avenue.c 1890s. I think there was a huge falling out over religion as my Presbyterian Grandfather, Joe Smyth married Mary Holmes' daughter (Hannah Guiler) in the RC Church of Limavady in 1911 and my Mother reports of bitterness&threatening behaviour over the early IRA that separated the families. I am definitely DNA related to the Miskimmons/Cummings of Limavady. Today I saw a historical photo of my Uncle Smyth with Willie Cummings and their McCool cousins out pigeon racing. Limavady Past and Present.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Name origin of Guyler

The Blackburns I am interested in lived as missionaries, hoping to bring the local Irish to their faith. Little headway was made and the families made their way to Pennsylvania to the much more successful New Garden of Chester meeting houses. They did have the friendship of William Penn, so it is possible that they had wealthy relatives. The Antrim meetings were held at Ballynacree and sometimes at Toberhead at the McCool family home. Anyway, this is getting off-topic, via DNA I believe the Quaker families of Lightfoot, Holmes, Blackburn and McKee are connected somewhere to the Guilers.

My Grandmother was Hannah Guiler/Guyler, born 1890 in Limavady from 3 generations of Alexander Guilers back to 1790s.There were three Guiler families in this area in the Protestant Landholders Records of 1740. Oral history, confirmed by American and Canadian branches, is that they were of French origin. There was a contingent of French soldiers who overwintered on the lands of the Quakers of Loughgall, Armagh in 1689 that culminated in the Battle of the Boyne. It is recorded in the Blackburn family history that it caused many sufferings to the Quakers there. As I have both Blackburn and Guiler in my family tree I have wondered if they are connected.

Guiler surname-Derry and Tyrone in Ireland. Anybody DNA testing might like to search for these French surnames that seem to connect. Gaillard, Saucier, Le Clair and Champagne/Lambert. Area of French origin suggests Perche, Normandy.

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Cummins of magilligan.

I might be years late to the party but here is my info. My 2 x Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Cummins, spelt Kimmons on her son's birth certificate. (1838) She was born around 1818, she married John Smyth in Ballykelly and it is noted that she came from Tully Townland. She had at least two boys, John and James (have DNA links to the James line) I think her Father was Samuel, but that is because I was contacted by a Grandson of the Sammy that was born in 1900. He was raised in Limavady, son of Kenneth Cummins.  The complication here is that I am also related to Sammy's Mother, so our DNA match could potentially be to the Holmes side and not the Cummins. I am assuming that my Cummins are the Magilligan branch because my dominant matches are to the McCurrys of Myroe who were fisherfolk in between Magilliagn and Moville. The Gedmatch No for my Mum, who is 94 and still kicking, is A340760.

Hi William,
I have a 4th cousin match to Thomas Wilroy Allen, a descendant of William Miller who went to Louisiana. He has recently been in touch with Eily, the cousin in her eighties you speak of at Longlands Rd.
The nexus is missing from our research but it appears that we share family links to the Eakins, in my case the Postem Eakins.  Since I posted this I have found strong DNA links to the Quaker families of Ballyhagan and 'Skip' has some to the Lyons in his tree. Mine are to Joseph Lightfoot, Father of Katherine Lightfoot who married James Guyen Miller. I'm wondering if the Miller is Skip's family. I am connected to Blackburns via the McCurry line (I'm a Gt Granddaughter of Sarah Jane McCurry) and it now seems that the Limavady ones may connect to the Armagh Quakers. It's all taking place via DNA records because the pre 1800 records are so scarce.  I recently joined the FB site of the McCools looking for descendants of Olivia McCracken and John McCool, but nothing is cohesive yet. Regardless of how it turns out I've learned so much and delved into the Quaker records in Find my Past. I know your name, your reputation precedes you and I'm sorry I hadn't checked my emails on this site. Would love to know if you have any anecdotal reports on this part of history.  Regards, Jo McKee, Auckland, New Zealand

Family History Beginners Board / Claudy, Ireland, Millbrook, Millar Eakin, 1800
« on: Wednesday 26 February 20 00:52 GMT (UK)  »
John Millar Born around 1800 was Scots/Irish probably from Alloa, Clackmannshire was a well-to-do businessman who owned 'Millbrook' and property around Claudy. His daughters married into the Ritchie, Craig and Lyons families. There are DNA links to Eakins of Claudy. Any history of how the Millars arrived in Ireland and descendants of this family much appreciated.
