Thanks for the information Lynne and Janis-much appreciated!

Lynne, I am almost sure that the Mary Prudhoe in your family tree was my great great grandfather's neice. His name was Edward Prudhoe and he had a brother John born in 1803, who I believe was Mary's father.

On the 1851 census for Blaydon, Mary is included in Luke Biggins household, but it looks like one of their sons, James, is visiting his grandfather John (listed as Pruddah), who is also living in Blaydon.

I will send you a private message to discuss this further.

I remembered where I saw the name "Janis"-she was a member of  Genes Reunited who got in touch with me a couple of years ago.

I managed to contact Allan via email but he hasn't really managed to get any further re. Ann Lee.

I found an IGI record for an Ann Lee born in Hexham in 1816-father John Lee, so she looks like she could be the right person and possibly her father is the one John Lee Prudhoe is named after.

His brother William, however seems to alternate between including the "Lee" bit and not. On the censuses it is not included, but on his death registry it is-very confusing!

Hi Janis,

The Mary Ann Prudhoe you mention is the daughter of yet another Wiliam and Ann Prudhoe!

They are listed on the 1841 census as living in in Stella, and William's occupation is recorded as "Keelman". His father John is listed on the same census page. I have traced the family  through the other censuses, and John Lee Prudhoe and William Lee Prudhoe are unfortunately not their descendants.

You may possibly be right about Ann being married previously, or having the children out of wedlock-I too have come across these glitches and it takes ages(and a lot of patience and determination!) to sort out.

I know of the Edward Prudhoe you mention-I am almost sure his father Joseph and my great great great grandfather Edward, born in 1779 were brothers.

Have we ever had any previous contact-your name seems familiar. Send me a PM if you want to discuss our family history further.

Regards Marilyn

Thanks Geoff, I have sent Allan a message through Rootschat, but I don't know whether  he is still a member.

If I do not receive a reply from him I notice he has a website of his own which gives an email address for him, so I will send him an email.

Thanks again for your help,
Marilyn

Hi,

Just found these postings whilst doing a general search for the surname Prudhoe, which is my direct line.

I am almost sure that the family you mention are my great great grandfather's relatives.

His name was Edward Prudhoe, born 1814 in Blaydon, and his parents were Edward and Ann (maiden name Dodds)

Edward and Ann's children included (along with my great great grandfather),  John (born1803), William (born 1806), Thomas (born 1809) and Mary (born 1811).

On the 1851 census, Edward and John are both living in Blaydon Staith with their respective families, and the family you have mentioned (Ann, now widowed, and her two sons John Lee and William) are also living in Blaydon Staith.

On the 1871 census, John Lee Prudhoe and my great great grandfather Edward are still living a few houses apart from each other.  William, John Lee's brother married a Yorkshire girl and is living there with his family.

As the last post in this thread was submitted last year, I hope that you will see this entry, as we obviously must share the same ancestry and it would be interesting to compare notes.

Hi Josiah,

Yes, I have noticed there are some variants regarding the name- mostly "Pruddah", so I always check them out when doing a search.
I am not from the area, but my grandfather was from Blaydon. I have managed to find my ancestors back to my great-great grandfather, and have now discovered his father's name to be Edward, but I cannot find them on the 1841 census for the area.
I will keep searching though, thanks once again for your help,
Marilyn
